ok...here's an overview/examples...

Everyone here grows up with the thanxgivin story thusly

its taught in skools, shown on tv, is generally marketed like this

In 1620, the pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock, after a perilous journey on the Mayflower.

they were fleeing religious persecution, and so were heading the the New World, to settle in the Jamestown colony in Virginia. But, they were blown off course, and landed in Plymouth Rock. With the help of local friendly Indians, namely a man named Squanto, they were able to settle in.

After a harsh winter, the celebrated the following fall with a large celebration, and invited their indian neighbors. the indians had never seen such a feast before.

The Pilgrims wore large hats with buckles.

they gave thanks to god for delivering them to this new land, full of new opportunities. So thats why we have thanxgiving

Now, you want all the falsehoods and myths in that?

1. Pilgrims didn't even call themselves that, its a name that was stuck on them decades later. They were a sect that called themselves the Saints. yet everyone has always called them pilgrims. And, the "pilgrims" were actually a minority on the Mayflower, the majority were farmers and the like. they later got very angry when the colony at plymouth was turned into a puritan theocracy.

2. no one is sure or knows where the "pilgrims" were heading. Its actually unlikely they were heading for Virginia, as they were trying to escape English persecution. Europeans had been visiting the Cape Cod area for a long time, and its known they had a detailed map on the area. they also landed where they did because they were running out of food according to their log, "especially beer"..that'll make modern day puritans cringe...

3. why did they settle at plymouth? well..there already was a town there...land had been cleared. the same thing happened all up and down the East Coast. people came and camped in pre existing areas. why and how? plague...the inhabitants had all been wiped out. small pox, plague and even the flu had decimated the First Nations. Entire towns and villages were killed "to a man" the pilgrims just came along and took over a semi abandoned corn field

Shall i continue?

Sqaunto had helped because he had been captured years earlier by some english sailors, and taken back to the UK..he eventaully earmed his freedom and headed back to his home, only to get captured again, and sold int o slavery in spain. he eventaully escaped..returned home..to find everyone dead. plague. soon there after, who sold arrive, but the pilgrims. who came on a ship that was hired by a man in england who squanto had worked/been indentured to....funny that

"a feast they'd never seen before"..seriously..thats in american textbooks....funny, since it should be the other way around, since it would have been all local foods, it would have been a feast the pilgrims had never seen

the pilgrims never used the term thanksgiving, as that was a religious term, and they held that fest in 1623...totally different...no games etc.

thanksgiving that we know here started in the 1860's when pres lincoln wanted a way to help bring the country together...so he named the last thursday in november to be called thanksgiving..

it didn't become a nationally holiday until WWII!

would you like more?
