Guest guest
The Times October 14, 2006 Animal activist loses court fightBy Nicola Woolcock A senior member of a militant group of animal rights activists faces substantial costs after the High Court in London threw out his claim that the group did not exist. Robin Webb, the press officer for the Animal Liberation Front (ALF), had tried to have his name removed from an injunction by Oxford University. The ALF has claimed that it does not exist as an organisation, as a way to avoid legal action. Mr Justice Irwin said that the ALF was sufficiently cohesive to be recognised and called Mr Webb a propagandist. Rizwan Majid, solicitor for Oxford University, said: “For 30 years the ALF has insisted it does not exist. Robin Webb’s position was that he was a self-appointed press officer for an organisation that does not exist. This clearly contradictory tactic did not work in court.” The university took out the injunction after receiving threats over its animal research laboratory. A costs order awarded against Mr Webb is to be assessed. The ruling also leaves the ALF open to being sued by the university. Peter H Send instant messages to your online friends http://uk.messenger.
