Group meat to live without it TASTY tofu and Yorkshire-style guacamole were tempting the Merrie City's vegetarians and vegans to a special picnic last week. The event was organised in celebration of National Vegetarian Month and gave non-meat lovers the chance to meet like-minded people, make new friends, and share recipe ideas. The main brains behind the event were Victoria and Chris Bonner, of Doncaster Road.Mrs Bonner, 34, said: “There are quite a few veggies and vegans in Wakefield and this was our chance to get together and have a bit of a chill out, make friends and swap ideas.“It was especially nice for the kids and young people to meet others who share the same lifestyles – they can feel like ‘the only one in the village’!”The picnic was very well attended and everyone took their own food

contributions, including vegan ‘sushi’, handmade vegan bread, tasty hummus and a guacamole dip which had been given a Yorkshire twist – by substituting avocado for mushy peas! And for those who thought vegans faced a life without chocolate or cream, Mr Bonner had a trick up his sleeve as he provided tasty non-dairy ice-cream and chocolate ices.Mrs Bonner added: “Being a vegan is not as hard or fussy as people think. Chris, myself and two children, Bob and Mary-Beth, are all vegans and 99 per cent of our shopping comes from normal supermarkets.“There is so much on offer now, from non-meat chicken nuggets to dairy-free cheese. “You can even buy vegan ‘kebab meat’ which I think is hilarious – it looks just as greasy as the ‘normal’ stuff.”Guests at the event are now looking forward to meeting on a regular basis as part of the newly-formed Wakefield Vegan and Vegetarian Group. For their next meeting, the group plan to visit an

organic farm in Doncaster where they will look at methods of growing their own vegetables, while a tasty non-dairy cake-testing event is on the table for December. For details, contact Mr and Mrs Bonner on 01924 374295. 09 October 2006Peter H
