The USDA seeks public comments on a petition to deregulate the same illegal genetically engineered (GE) rice manufactured by Bayer CropScience that has contaminated long grain rice supplies and food products around the world, sending the global food industry and consumers into a frenzy about GE contamination. U.S. authorities have failed to recall the illegal GE rice variety LL601 regardless of it being banned from import into Japan and the European Union. The contamination has caused long-grain rice futures prices to plummet, as well as Bayer CropScience to be sued by a group of farmers trying to make up for serious profit losses. Bayer CropScience is now asking the USDA to grant retroactive market approval of the illegal rice, even though the company gave up plans to market LL601 five years ago. These kinds of experimental crops are prohibited because intensive testing is required to determine whether or not the mutagenic gene-splicing procedures create serious hazards for human health and the environment. The illegal rice remains untested. Take Action by October 10th:1.
