Guest guest
You Deserve An Asthma Attack Today: Sound Off On McDonald's Hummer Giveaway With Ronald's Sign-O-Matic August 18, 2006 — By Environmental Working Group WASHINGTON, D.C. — Americans who care about clean air, global warming and children's health are outraged that McDonald's is giving away toy Hummers with Happy Meals. Now they can tell the world - and McDonald's - how they feel. Environmental Working Group (EWG) and HybridCars.com introduce the Ronald McHummer Sign-O-Matic, an interactive website that lets you write your own slogan or message about the Hummer giveaway, display it on a McDonald's marquee, and send a message to the president of the fast-food chain. (The site, www.RonaldMcHummer.com, is not affiliated with or endorsed by McDonald's or General Motors.) Many visitors have already used the Sign-O-Matic to suggest new McDonald's slogans in keeping with its partnership with the supersized, smog-spewing, gas-guzzling Hummer: I'M BREATHIN' IT SUPERSIZE MY ASTHMA ATTACK SPECIAL SAUCE, LETTUCE, CHEESE AND FOREIGN OIL DEPENDENCY " McDonald's has helped make American kids the fattest in the world, so now they're looking for new ways to promote an unhealthy lifestyle, " said EWG President Ken Cook. " They're selling future car buyers on the fun of driving a vehicle that emits 39 times more smog- forming chemicals than the cleanest cars on the road. " During August, McDonald's is giving away eight different Hummer models with purchase of a Happy Meal or a Mighty Kids Meal. The company said it plans to hand out 42 million toy Hummers, and it gave away 10 million in the promotion's first five days. " Hummers pollute the air, contribute to global warming, encourage dependence on foreign oil and show American automakers' lack of commitment to clean, energy-efficient technology, " said Bradley Berman, editor of HybridCars.com. " McDonald's should stop this irresponsible promotion to kids immediately. " Visitors to www.RonaldMcHummer.com type their slogans or comments into the Sign-O-Matic, which shows them how it would look on a McDonald's sign. Then they can send it to a friend and also send a message to Ralph Alvarez, president of McDonald's North America in Oak Brook, Ill. " Our children should be learning about cleaner, healthier cars and what they can do to protect the environment, not gas-guzzlers that keep us dependent on Middle East oil, " says the message to Alvarez.
