Take Action on These Two Important Issues

June 28th, 2006

Give input to the California Department of Food and Agriculture to help develop a California perspective on the 2007 Farm Bill.

With California being the largest agricultural producer in the nation, the 2007 Farm Bill will profoundly impact the future of our states agricultural industry. In coordination with other state agencies, and using viewpoints of state industries such as nutrition, agriculture, and resources; the California Department of Food and Agriculture will provide a consensus to the USDA for Californias perspective on the 2007 Farm Bill. Submit comments to the USDA by July 17th on the petition to formally deregulate and allow commercial growing of genetically engineered (GE) plums.

The USDA not only openly admits that this GE plum will definitely contaminate organic, non-organic, and wild plum trees if it is approved (because you cant regulate pollinating insects), but that the plum pox virus (the reason for its creation) does not even exist in the United States! GE plums have never been tested for their safety or toxicity in relation to both short- and long-term effects on health, the environment, and the economy. They have not been tested on animals, birds, bees or humans for safety, and there is no scientific data addressing the potential risk of toxicity. The only GE fruit tree previously approved a Hawaiian papaya resulted in mass devastation of the Hawaiian papaya export market, not to mention worldwide protests and import bans. Organic and non- organic farmers alike were once earning up to three times as much for their non-GE papayas, but that is also on the downturn, as it is now harder to guarantee non-GE fruit.

Help to insure that the GE plum is NOT approved by submitting comments online by July 17 at: http://www.regulations/gov. In the Agency box, select Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, select Notices as the Document Type and APHIS- 2006-0084 as the Keyword or ID. Press Submit to submit or view comments, click beneath Add Comments and scroll down to submit your letter.

To submit comments by mail - send original plus three copies to: Docket No. APHIS-2006- 0084, Regulatory Analysis and Development, PPD, APHIS, Station 3A-03.8, 4700 River Rd, Unit 118, Riverdale, BD 20737-1238.Read more...Your action is needed to help progress California agriculture in a safer, more positive direction!
