Farm Sanctuary recently came to the rescue of six piglets who were being used for

" practice surgeries " at a university veterinary hospital.

As young as eight weeks old, the piglets had undergone

hernia operations, and then, no longer useful to the university, they were scheduled to be sent to auction, where

they would have been sold for slaughter. Sadly, this is a fate that countless farm animals used in university

teaching experiments face each year. At some veterinary schools, animals used for experiments are bred

specifically for student use, and at other schools, " test " animals are obtained from local farmers

and returned once students are done with them.

But, thankfully, our California Shelter has just

welcomed these six babies, each with fresh surgical wounds on their bellies, and they are now safe from harm

forever.

The piglets arrived extremely weak, sickly and

coughing badly. The group was quickly placed in hospital pens so that their surgical wounds can heal, and they

can be treated for severe respiratory and eye infections.

Rescue costs are estimated to

total $22,500, including transport, spay surgeries, vaccinations, parasite treatments, antibiotics, eye

ointment, and other medications, veterinary care, bedding, and feed. In addition, one piglet, Cesak, is

already experiencing a complication from his hernia surgery, and is not healing properly. In order to survive,

he now needs an additional surgery to correct this problem.

DONATIONS ARE

NEEDED IMMEDIATELY TO FUND CESAK'S SURGERY, AND THE RESCUE AND CARE COSTS TO SAVE THESE SIX

INNOCENT PIGLETS.

EMERGENCY RESCUE DONATIONSVeterinary care for pigs is very expensive, especially when

surgeries are needed. Please consider making as large of a gift as you can for this rescue. Please call

When one vet student learned that it was time for the

piglets to go to auction, she asked that their lives be spared. Her courage and kindness meant the difference

between life and death for six lucky souls. Before arriving at Farm Sanctuary, our six newest arrivals were

viewed as disposable property and identified only by the numbers on their ear tags, but when one vet student

looked into their eyes, she saw more than research subjects or " tools. " She saw six unique individuals

who could love and hope and feel just as she could, and who only wanted to live.

With your help, the piglets will

be given a chance at life and happiness. Here at Farm Sanctuary, their ear tags have come off for good, and

from now on, pigs number 55, 56, 57, 58, 59, and 60, will forever be known as Johnny, Cesak, Simon, Joan Van Ark,

Stacey and Charlotte.Thank you for reaching out to help in this time of very urgent need, for six very

special individuals. Click here to help the

piglets!
