Linda,

I encounter these problems all the time!! I always look over the menu very

carefully.

Once I ordered a salad, no mention of meat at all. It got to me and I noticed

some brown " flecks " , I said to the waitress, ma'am, these are bacon bits. She

chuckled and said, hehe....oops oh yeah, can't you just pick them off?.

I said no, I won't and I would like you to bring me a fresh one. I had to talk

to the manager about give the wait staff " sensitivity " training to customers

needs.

A chinese restaurant has a " vegetable and noodle " soup. I had to really press

to get an answer and come to find out they use pork/beef stock. They claim this

gives the best " flavor " . I told them this is dishonest. They told me with a

straight face, no, it is not.....because there IS NO MEAT IN the soup!!

In mexican restaurants, I usually can't eat anything, because UNLESS it is

stated, they use lard or a combo of lard and vegetable blend to fry the chips

and they use lard to make the masa to make the tortillas, and tamales, they use

bacon and lard in beans and rice too.

In Italian restaurants sometimes they put a little bacon grease on vegetables as

a " seasoning " .

I have many stories, so I can relate to what happened to you.

Bottom line, It is NOT always what it says it is. Now, I will locate a phone

number and call and ask to speak to the manager. I explain why I am asking and

most times I get great response. A few times I have run up against a wall. I

just won't go to those places.

At a diner I asked for a cup of hot chocolate, it came with marshmallows, I told

the waitress I could not eat the marshmallows. She said, " you don't like them? "

I said well, they are made with gelatin which is made from animals bones. She

just looked at me like there was something wrong with me.

They can get " snippy/defensive " often times the wait sff is clueless so I

agree one must be polite when making inquires. I'm sure you have heard the

horror stories of what they can do to your food if you make them angry.

establishments you always have to ask.

I once was ordering so called " vegan " garlic mashed potatoes and was

inquiring to how they were made.... " no dairy - we use stock " I asked

what kind and the server didn't know and had to go check....low and

behold it was chicken stock!!! Can you believe?

in the south, so you can check with your waitress. Some have no

idea, so I ask them to ask the cook and if they don't know, to please

bring the label off the product if it come pre-made to them. I do

this very politely. If done in a courteous way they are usually

very accommodating. If you have any doubts about the ingredients,

leave it alone and just order something else, is my policy.
