Guest guest
Slim, I wish you all the best with you gardening! I've read of other " natural " pest-control methods, but they are kind of gross--and I could not mention them on this board, as some of them involve killing the bug(s) themselves to use as part of the " remedy " . I saw a garden last summer that was located near " deer country " . We have a lot of that in our area and apparently, putting wads of cut-off human hair into a small bag--like in a tied-off piece of pany-hose, will repel the deer fairly well. Planting lots of marigolds (the kind that are really SMELLY) is also supposed to get rid of the " bad " nematodes in the soil that can harm plant roots. Nasturtium supposedly is similar. (Whenever I planted nasturtiums, however, I've most often gotten a large batch of aphids, and they love nasturtiums. By the way (and you probably know this, too) pansies, violas (johnny jump ups), calendulas, the SIGNET (very small) marigolds, and nasturtiums--are all edible. I have grown them at various times and they are a colorful thing to add to salads. I don't like to have to kill bugs very much. It's good if birds, bats, toads (or frogs) and other such bug-eaters can be enticed into the garden area. I shun the use of chemical deterrents because I get allergy-like symptoms from them (the chemical bug-deterrents). Anytime someone tries something that's non-chemical when gardening, I'm all for it!
