Thank you for the info! Fruit! Hmmmm...several fruits that I don't know

about/have not tried.

(Living in the bland midwest, in mostly rural downstate Illinois, exotic

fruits don't show up in the stores as often as in other places. I have tried

many things, but have never tasted the

dragon fruit. I am curious about that, now that someone has written about it.

How can one tell when/if/how much it is ripe?

If I lived where they grow or where they are more readily available, maybe I'd

know this...but when buying something in the store to try for the first time, I

keep wondering, " What if I get one that's not ripe (or is too ripe) to taste

" right " for eating?

This actually happened to me the first time I ever purchased an avocado to

eat; it not being something I had " grown up with " , I was ignorant of what to

look (or feel, etc) for in purchasing such fruit. The one I bought was a little

too " green " , and I wasn't too sure I liked it, but I got an inspiration and it

came out pretty well, after all. I was in school at the time, and was buying a

few groceries to " take back to the dorm " . I added to my avocado a carton of

lemon flavored yogurt, some " own juice " canned pineapple, and when I got to the

dorm, I cut up the avocado into chunks, stirred it into the yogurt with the bits

of pineapple, and ate it--it was GOOD. From then on, I was a fan of

avocado--and later learned how to better tell when such fruit was " just right "

to eat. (MMMM!)

I am also curious about " starfruit " --which looks pretty, but someone told me

doesn't taste like much. I've never tasted it. And " Jackfruit " --what is THAT?

I saw some mention of that recently here, didn't I?

Well those are my fruit questions. What is a Jackfruit, a starfruit and what

do they taste like--how can the ripeness be determined? (and on that last

question, I add, how can a dragonfruit's ripeness be determined?) Thank you for

any answers! This is a very interesting and informative group!
