what's everyone's favorite veggie?

Hi- I'm Kelly and I am new to the group. I am one of the fortunate ones who

lives in a very pro-farming area. Thankfully not just Pigs! We have lots of

lovely farmer's markets here in NC. All the foods are wonderful and very cheap!

I really love the fresh honey! But back to topic; I eat all the veggies I

can get from our farmer's market, but my favorite is the fresh green beans.

Its a little bit of work but this country girl doesn't mind.

I love swedes (rutabagas), parnips and turnips but I

know so many people don't. Maybe it's an acquired

taste. I grew up on them, I don't know any Swedes who

don't use them in their cooking. Have you tried them

grated raw on salads? You just might like them this

way. I know most people eat raw grated carrots but

many don't care for their carrots cooked.

I like carrots no matter what you do to them, as long as they aren't burned.

UGH!

I like turnips. There is a farm area outside Anchorage about 50 miles and

they grow turnips out there. Durring the short harvest time they sell turnips

in their produce stands. I always have to stop in and get a couple turnips. I

eat them raw, on th way home. The Farmers market may or may not have them and

the grocery stores only have ones shipped in from out of state that aren't as

fresh as they could be. A really fresh turnips is crunchy like and apple and

sweet. I don't particularly like them cooked, though, because they loose the

fresh sweet taste and get a bitter taste.

I eat all vegetables no matter what they are with the exception that they may

cost too much.

I don't think there is one I don't like.

I have lots of favorites but I could make myself sick on broccoli I think and

brussel sprouts.

There are not many over here and if they have them I am usually at work when

they are going on noon to 3 on a Wednesday well you get the idea.

There is not much farming over in this area it would be local gardeners only

really.

This seems to be more cattle country and I am a vegetarian LOL. So I head for

the local stores and see what they have. I am 12 miles from the good stores and

30 from a whole foods market.

Oh I forgot to tell you I do also grow a lot of my own herbs and tomatoes in my

two small greenhouses. I also try other plants but I need more bees so I am

going to move some around this year. I also grown peppers and things like that.

I love all veggies, except bell peppers don't like me (they make me

burp!). Mushrooms in everything, spinach, green beans, cabbage,

broccoli, cauli (all colors!), zucchini and summer squash, carrots,

salad ingredients.... maybe it would be better to say which ones AREN'T

my favorites: parsnips are OK but I don't choose them often and the

same with corn (when I was pregnant I couldn't stand the smell of corn

in any form!).

Jann (who is looking forward to summer and fresh local veggies!)

my favaorite changes often too. Right now I'm on a greens kick. Just got off

a cilantro kick. And my mid winter salad thing seems to be gearing up. Yum!

Can't wait to start the veggie garden.

It changes often, but right now I think my two favorites are spinach and

sweet potatoes. I just tried Japanese sweet potatoes for the first time

this year, and now I'm totally hooked. I like them baked and served

with a spicy blueberry sauce-Yum!!

I love asparagus. It seems to grow wild in my dad's yard. It's really good in

polenta, although I also like it over tagliatelle with baby artichokes.

Excellent!

Unfortunately there are many vegetables I don't like. I'm really trying to

broaden my horizons but it's going slow. Especially since i'm here in Amman

where my faves (broccoli, asparagus, artichoke, spinach) aren't readily

available or are very expensive, and I can't stand eggplant, which is popular

here. I did buy one today and I'm going to see if i like it in curry. If it's

good i'll post the recipe!

I love so many veggies but my favorite by far is asparagus, follwed

by brussel sprouts. I have realized lately that my favorite way to

make these and many other veggies is to simply drizzle with a little

olive oil and salt and pepper and then bake /broil in the over ( or

grill!) So simple but something I alway go back to as my favorite

way to eat veggies! Try with some veggies if you haven't works with

any!!

I think all veggies compete pretty heavily for my palate, but lately I've been

eating loads of

raw turnips. I've started slicing them thin and sticking them in my veggie

sandwiches for a

little crunch, and they make great " dippers " for hummus and other tasty spreads!

Do mushrooms count as veggies? They're really fungi, but they would be my

favorite, if they count.

If not, then olives... no, olives are fruit. <sigh>

Let's see... LOL... eggplant, sweet potato, and butternut squash

probably share third place.

Gee... I can't think of any veggies that I don't like except for

okra, and I'll even eat that in Gumbo or something where you can't really taste

it. LOL I'm not doing this well, am I?

I know! Bean sprouts! Yes! And most beans, in fact. I love

beans, even lima beans, which I think many people hate.

Oh, and speaking of veggies that folks hate, I love Brussels

sprouts, too...

Okay, perhaps I should just stick with eggplant, huh? LOL Sorry.

<giggle> Unless mushrooms count as veggies, in which case, they definitely

come first, portabello and oyster mushrooms sharing first place, with shiitake

taking a very close third.

Am I talking too much? LOL

So are tomatoes but they serve as vegetables. LOL. I think my favorite

vegetable, this week, is cauliflower. There is just so much you can do with

it. It mascarades as pasta and meat; it goes in salads and vegetable trays or

cooks up so yummy.

Next week it may be asparagus again.

Cabbage and tomatoes for me. I have sweet and sour in my fridge year round.

Also love Sauerkraut. TOMATOES are #1 though. I can't wait for them to come

in season and I use canned when I can't get good fresh.
