Guest guest
Hi Christie I'm heading to England in August to visit my daughter. She has suggested that we take a jaunt up to Edinburgh for a few days of sightseeing. I am wondering if Scotland is as kind to vegetarians as England is. I find in England that even the pub in the smallest village has great vegetarian meals so am looking forward to trying out the same in Scotland, even if it is for just a few days. Can I ask you closer to the time if there are any veggie restaurants that I should try to get to? ( ) ( __ c\_/ Audrey
Guest guest
Audrey, you will be arriving during the International Festival so Edinburgh will be VERY busy and you may find it difficult to find accommodation in the city unless you book well in advance. I've heard of people having to stay many miles out of the city. Distances may not seem too far in Canadian terms but you need to bear in mind that public transport here is not as great as it could be and driving/parking in the city is increasingly difficult. Scotland is great for vegetarian food and you will usually be able to find vegetarian options everywhere. At that time of year you may find that you need to book ahead for dinner. My favourite restaurant is The Kalpna which is an Indian vegetarian restaurant with vegan options. I also like Susie's Diner which is also veggie and vegan. Bann's is good and I've heard great things about Black Bo's but I've not been there myself. It's worth checking out Happy Cow website: http://www.happycow.net/europe/scotland/edinburgh/index.html Please feel free to contact me offlist if you would like. Guest guest
Yes, there is vegetarian haggis and it is lovely. I had some on January 25th for Burns night. We have a couple of recipes on file. I have made it but usually just buy it here. I am London/Irish but have been living here for more than 30 years. Guest guest
That's neat...I would love to hear your lovely voice. Everyone over your way loves to hear my husband talk. He's from Nashville, TN and has that drawl......... I'll have to look for the recipes for Haggis. My husband loves it. He was sneaky and got some frozen while there and brought it home in his suitcase. He was still a wee frozen when he arrived. It's a little rich for me. I can eat a little of it. But I've never tried the vegetarian type. What is the casing that is used for vegetarian? I love to watch the Edinburg Tatoo videos....very stirring. My husband was learnign the bagpipes, but we moved and he needs to find a new group here. Guest guest
One of these years I'm taking a trip to Scotland. I want to visit Edinburgh & the Highlands after reading the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. I've been telling my co-workers that I want to move over there after reading Outlander! Guest guest
Hi Christie Thanks for the heads up on the Festival. I think we might just make it before the festival. I would prefer that things were a bit quieter for just some easy sightseeing. I'm not much for crowds. I'll make a note of the restaurants you mentioned and I may contact you off line closer to the time I'm going for any further suggestions. I'm glad to hear that Scotland is veggie friendly. Canada isn't nearly as friendly as UK. Thanks again. ( ) ( __ c\_/ Audrey
Guest guest
It's hard to miss the festival if you are going to be here in August. It all kicks off with the Jazz and Blues Festival in July and then carries on through to the end of August: http://www.edinburgh-festivals.com/festivals.cfm I'm sorry to hear that Canada hasn't become more veggie friendly. It was pretty bad when I lived there in the 70s but I'd have hoped things would have improved by now. Guest guest
Hi Christie I have my daughter researching Edinburgh. She's planning the trip. Thanks for the info. It may be that we'll go to Ireland instead or back to France if Scotland seems busy. Of course there other parts of Scotland I would love to see so I'll just wait and see what develops. Thanks again for your help ( ) ( __ c\_/ Audrey
