Compare USA BSE testing with Europe, etc - list of BSE - mad cow cases

2000 - 2006

Shortly after discovering the third case of BSE in the US in March 2006, the

USDA

announced tests would be cut from about 300,000 a year down to only 40,000

animals

out of 35 million slaughtered. Further, USA only tests about 2% of " downers "

-- including animals with CNS (central nervous system) symptoms - the cattle

most

at risk for BSE. The beef industry estimates there are 100,000 downers a year

.. . . the National Renderers Association says there are over 1 million downers

each

year in the USA.

Testing is usually limited to animals over 30 months of age. This is not

protective.

Japan has found BSE in animals aged 23 months, 21 months and 20 months.

Japan, which tests all animals -- recently found its 24th case of BSE.

Europe reportedly tests all downers and 25% of other animals.

Here is a list of BSE cases in Europe, etc. for the period 2000 - 2006

USDA plan to reduce USA BSE testing to less than 0.001% of animals slaughtered

would

appear to be more protective of the beef industry than public health.
