Guest guest
This year, Phillies fans who are health-conscious, adventurous and/or vegetarian will have a new option at Citizens Bank Park: veggie hot dogs. The stadium joins a dozen other Major League Baseball venues in a national trend to offer veggie dogs on concession stand menus. And if you haven't tried a vegetarian hot dog since the original bright-orange "Tofu Pups," you may be pleasantly surprised at how well the park's selection, Yves' Smart Dogs, holds up against the meat-based variety - especially once you add your traditional condiments. Kevin Tedesco, Aramark's division manager of concessions, said the veggie dogs will be available at one of the main stands in Section 128, "right there by third base." He plans to see what the response is like, and expand locations later if the Smart Dogs sell briskly enough. Last year, as Yo! Food readers may recall, Tedesco was behind the introduction of vegan Gardenburgers to the park's offerings, and the strong success of those items paved the way for this year's vegan hot dogs, which will be served on vegan rolls. In deciding which veggie dog to go with, Tedesco points to Scott Geiger of Philly's Club Veg (who also advised on the veggie burgers). "Scott was a big help, going over which hot dogs work best in certain conditions and all that." He says that going with a vegan dog was good business sense "because this way more people can enjoy the product." That set of people includes anyone who's willing to try a new, tasty twist on a traditional pastime. See you next to third base!Peter H Photos – NEW, now offering a quality print service from just 8p a photo.
