Read it online - http://www.bayareaveg.org/news Compassionate Living Program PresentsAnimal Liberation Book Discussion - Feb 12 The Compassionate Living program examines and presents information related to vegetarianism and living a compassionate lifestyle. This event happens monthly on the 2nd Sunday. This year we have scheduled four books to be read and discussed in a supportive environment. The first of these books is the classic "Animal Liberation" by Peter Singer. If you missed last month's presentation on Effective Advocacy: Activist Skills and Activist Rights, the information (podcast and handouts) are available online. Episode 4 & Episode 5 For those who like to plan ahead, the March presentation will be "Use the Law, Help the Animals". Vegan Food Party The first Vegan Food Party of 2006 was held in a charming oceanside city of Pacifica, just south of SF. Alex Bury gave a wonderful presentation on Food as Advocacy, demonstrating how good food can speak volumes in promoting vegetarianism. This month, for the first time ever, we're having a VFP in Berkeley, organized by Sheera. If you're interested in hosting a Vegan Food party, which are very fun, food-filled events, please contact Tammy with a suggested month or specific date. Erik Marcus is back in town! Host of the popular podcast "Erik's Diner", publisher of vegan.com, author of Vegan: the New Ethics of Eating, and Meat Market: Animals, Ethics, and Money, Erik Marcus is back in the Bay Area to talk about his most recent book, Meat Market, at book stores on Feb 17th/San Jose and Feb 19th/Berkeley. Volunteers are needed at both events to distribute information about Bay Area Vegetarians. Please contact Tammy if you can help. We're also hosting a discussion on veg*n advocacy with Erik Marcus on Feb 19th. This discussion is geared towards local activists. If you're interested, please RSVP. Great American Meat-Out "Meat-Out is the world's largest and oldest annual grassroots diet education campaign", says the Farm Animal Reform Movement, creator of the Meat-Out occasion. "Every spring, thousands of Meatout supporters educate their communities and ask their friends, families, and neighbors to pledge to "kick the meat habit (at least for a day) and explore a wholesome, nonviolent diet of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains." It can be as simple as leafleting to doing outreach at your local farmer's market or even more creative, like bringing a wonderful vegan meal to your favorite radio host. If you're interested in hosting a Bay Area Meat-Out activity in your community, please contact us. KFC Cruelty Protest Update Several BAVeg volunteers have been protesting every month at KFC restaurants in cities around the Bay Area. Last year, the Palo Alto location closed. We just learned that one of the restaurants in SF has closed, too! Here's some pictures from a KFC protest at the now closed SF Valencia KFC: For those new to these types of protests, there are two roles -- holding a sign (this is what we need the most help with) and leafleting (only need a few people to do this). The more people that can help, the bigger our message for the chickens is. Please take a few minutes and read this month's Compassion in Action alert regarding KFC, and please try to attend a KFC Cruelty Protest currently happening in SF, Palo Alto, San Jose, San Rafael, and Pacifica. If there isn't one happening in your community, please let me know if you'd like to organize one. Let's keep standing up for the Chickens. Thank you to everyone who has been supporting these local KFC Cruelty Protests, and especially to our organizers - Thea, Candace, Hannah, Carol, and Tammy. Compassion in Action If chickens had the same legal protections as dogs and cats, or even cows or pig, their treatment by KFC would warrant felony cruelty-to-animals charges. But without federal laws to protect them, it is up to KFC to ensure that the 850 million chickens who end up in their buckets and boxes are not grossly abused. And it is up to caring, compassionate folks like us to urge KFC to make these changes. PETA launched this campaign three years ago, and worked with members of KFC’s own animal welfare board to recommend an animal welfare program. Please take a few minutes to contact KFC and politely ask them to implement these welfare reforms. The main points are: Adopt the "Animal Care Standards" program. Replace electrical stunning and throat-slitting with controlled-atmosphere killing. Switch to less cruel mechanized chicken gathering. Breed for health rather than forcing rapid growth, and stop feeding drugs to chickens. Make all welfare standards transparent and verifiable. Contact: David Novak, CEO, Yum! Brands / 13006 N.
