Guest guest
Hi Debbie, I'm new to the group. I've been a veggie for 19 years and can't say that I've had any real cravings for meat. I never really liked it to begin with. I thought that your question was interesting though. I located a similar question at: http://www.vegan.com/issues/1999/feb99/messina.htm I can say that taking suppliments, especially B12 has helped me feel much better and seems to give me a lot more energy. I hope that this helps a little. Guest guest
Thank you.....I am now wondering if any of you know what level your B-12 should be.....when mine is in the 3000 range I have lots of energy...can think well and fast on my feet....and my overall health seems very good.....however my surgeon says that my level should not be higher than about 600.....so he will not renew my injections.....I did give my self the last of my injections last night and the cravings are not so strong today..... Guest guest
Hi, it's Mary Ellen the spazz again. Thanks to all who responded to my " cravings " email. Here is how I handled it: I took a nice hot bath and read a couple chapters in the book " Nature's First Law: The Raw-Food Diet " by Arlin, Dini & Wolfe which is extremely inspiring and I highly recommend it, anyway, then I munched on more raw almonds and walnuts, then I went to sleep. I'm so happy I didn't give in, because I'm sure I would have felt like crap today. So far I have made it 15 days(in a row) without a morsel of cooked food. (Applause) Also, my aunt and cousin came over today and took me out to lunch and I only had the salad bar, which was not much to speak of, but at least it was raw. Lettuce (not iceberg thank goodness), cherry tomatoes, raw mushrooms, cucumbers, red onions and carrot shreds. I passed on the garbanzo beans even though they were calling my name. And for the dressing I fished the lemon wedge out of my glass of water and squirted it on my salad, so that was good and the whole time my aunt and cousin were eating fried fish and fried chicken and mashed potatoes and what-not right in front of me, but I made it through, even when we were checking out and all those donuts and loaves of bread were staring me in the face. Somehow I feel a little stronger today. Hope everyone is happy! Guest guest
Hi. I found my cravings were worse before my period and I got very hungry for two days. It passed, but it was difficult to endure. It seemed like I was eating all the time. I just made sure I had plenty of salads, fresh juice, and fruits on hand to eat. You can do it. Your body is just adjusting. Good luck. It looks tome as though you nearly had a meal there. Mixing of sweet and fat in the same meal is not the greatest unless nature has done it for you as in a durian for example. Whilst in transition, the body adapts and I well recall feeling just on the edge of being hungry most of the time. I speculate that the craving is for carbohydrate packed cooked food. Now when you move over to taking the carbs from fruit you need to eat a great deal more. Given the waste in nature, there is no harm in eating far more fruit than 4 apples in a meal. Last night I ate about 12-20 sticks of celery and some kale leaves with their flowers for dinner! This morning I ate nothing until 10 am and then I ate a bunch of about 5 bananas, and followed it by six apples. Hope this helps Peter
Guest guest
I know how it feels. I too have been off cooked foods for about 2 weeks now, and this is my 2nd or 3rd attempt in as many years to go raw. The cravings haven't bothered me this time. You might try a little less sweet fruit and a bit more variety of veggies in juices and salads. Adding a little (not alot!) of natural fats like coconut and avocado helps too. I used to eat fruit only in the morning and my cravings by noon or one would be driving me crazy. Now, and I know this goes against some rules, but it seems to be working for me, I have a glass of fresh green veggie juice, and a big salad made with spinach and kale and mustard instead of lettuce, then tomato, cucumber, carrot (only a little bit), throw in a whole avocado and dress it with lemon or lime juice and olive oil. This keeps me going until well after midday. I have a handful of raw nuts as a snack all by themselves around 1 or 2, then around 4 I will have a bowl of fruit, choosing locally grown when possible and the lowest glycemic index as possible. By evening I have found that I'm not that hungry, but I will have a homemade nut/seed pate' on lettuce leaves or on dehydrated sprout crackers. Seems to keep hunger and cravings at bay for me. I woke up this morning feeling good, and not achey all over like I used to when cooking my food.
Guest guest
Micki, You are quite right about green leaves taking away the craving. They are excellent for all craving. They will kill nicotine, alcohol and cooked food addictions more effectively than anything except a fast. However a fast is a whole operation. The quick fix is definitely green leaves. They must be there with fruit anyway. Just stay with it! Peter micki [singermuse] 13 April 2004 17:01 rawfood [Raw Food] Re: Cravings I know how it feels. Hello all, Do you think the cravings are worse in the winter in cold climates?? Maybe this is kind of natural. I get a horrendous big appetite in the winter and it mostly seems I want lots of filling, fatty foods!! What do you all think of diets of people in the extreme north where growing anything is just not possible due to no growing season. Some natives of these extreme northern climates can live pretty long and no heart disease. I read a bio of an old Innuit woman once and she stated the only times she got sick and felt unwell was when she visited relatives in cities. That is pretty understandable if it involved an abrupt change in diet though. Guest guest
Carolyn -- you'd have to make these, but they are super simple. They can be eaten plain or dehydrated ... Carob Cookies ( this recipe has been inspired b absolutely delicious Chocolate Easter Eggs by RawGuru) Process: 1 cup almonds (measure before soaking) 1 cup walnuts, and 1/4 cup olive oil then add: 8 Tbl carob and process till well mixed. Finally add 1/4 cup raisins and 20 dates and process till sticky but still a little crumbly. Form cookies. Keep them in the fridge. Makes about 30 small cookies. Note: At this point they taste like brownies. I put some in the dehydrator overnight, and they are great that way too. More cookie- like. cheers terry rawfood , " Siviax3 " <siviax3@c...> wrote: > > I have got a serious, serious craving going on right now for something sweet and snacky, like a chewy brownie or cookies or something along those lines. Guest guest
No raw food takes away any cravings for cooked for me. They're two separate entities, the one doesn't compare to the other in the least as far as my emotional makeup is concerned. Dates are nice but they don't take away the craving I might have for some cooked item. I want cooked because of desires that have nothing to do with physical satisfaction, it's emotional. It's emotional craving, and who knows what the emotions are behind the craving for cooked, deprivation, wanting something different, different tastes, dead food appeal. Guest guest
In food processor mix equal amounts of walnuts and raisins until it is oily. Form into whatever shape you like and sit in refrigerator for a while. Cut and enjoy. You can also add dates mixed with lemons to make an icing. I only do that when I am going to a potluck. This recipe is from Alissa Cohen's torte. Guest guest
Carolyn, I make some really yummy candies I call almond joy: coconut cream, virgin coconut oil, raw carob or ground cacao chips, agave nectar to sweeten (since honey is too sweet for me), almonds or almond butter and roll them in coconut flakes. There are so many raw sweet recipes if you want to look up on desserts on some of the raw food sites. I think our old habits are just trying to reclaim us or toxins still inside and sometimes it's like Rich said...just an emotional comfort thing. I just never get cravings for junk sweets anymore...especially since I know how very sick I'd get :-O Diana of Dewberry Hill - In rawfood , " Siviax3 " <siviax3@c...> wrote: > > I have got a serious, serious craving going on right now for something sweet and snacky, like a chewy brownie or cookies or something along those lines. Guest guest
Hey Elizabeth. Welcome to the group and congrats on your pregnancy. Is this your first? It is for me and James and we are really excited. My pregnancy has been great, but I always told myself that I was going to have a good, healthy and fun pregnancy. I believe that in some cases mind over matter really does work. Go into something with a positive attitude and it'll all come out so much better. I did have about three weeks of (just) nausea, so I pretty much lived off of bananas and smoothies. And of course the exhaustion had me sleeping whenever I could. But as soon as I hit tri-2 it was as if I woke up. I'm eating all my regular meals, experimenting with new ones and doing somewhat okay staying away from the junk food. I became a vegetarian about 4 years ago with a few set backs here and there and every once in a great while I still eat fish. So, I guess I'm not a real vegetarian, yet. But, I haven't had any me*t cravings, so that is good! How about you, Elizabeth? Are you a vegetarian? What types of cravings, if any, are you having? How cool to have someone else on this group prego and practically the same time! They have my due date as Feb 25; but I keep getting this feeling that I'm going to be early. Maybe that's wishful thinking, because I don't know too many firsts that don't go past the due date! Denise , " Elizabeth " <elizabeths@b...> wrote: > Hi Denise. I am new to the group. I was pregnant with my second, still breastfeeding my first, and vegetarian:) So don't believe a word of what they say!!! Both my kids weighed 7lbs 13oz, nice healthy babies:) I do recommend taking flax seed or eating something with the Omega 3/6/9 ratio. This is good for the babies brain, and I read that it helps them figure out night and day easier. My son sleep through the night the first one at the hospital, and my daughter had no problems either. If I find where I read it I'll post it. Good Luck ladies! I craved buttercream icing with my first, and YUCK!! Chuck E Cheese pizzas with my second.
