Guest guest
Posted by the Asbury Park Press on 12/20/05Go vegan for health The Dec. 11 article "Going vegetarian: a meaty challenge" is a good invitation to look seriously at the numerous reasons for becoming a vegetarian (better yet, a vegan).Everyone concerned about health, animals, the environment and our future in general has to make a transition to a vegan lifestyle. Being a vegetarian, or even a vegan, it is not a challenge to plan meals or dinner parties. Nor does it mean fighting with hunger all day long. All my life, I needed to eat something every two hours while struggling to stay in shape. During the six years of being a vegetarian I felt physically better, but only since I became a vegan (in 2000) I know how it feels not to be hungry.I have more energy than 10 years ago. There are endless choices of things to cook for any occasion. On average the expenses for a vegan diet are lower than for a meat-based diet, but expenses reflect more personal habits than anything else. However, the reduction in medical bills for health problems often caused by consumption of animal fat and animal protein are significant. Let us all make smart and compassionate choices.
