Guest guest
A lot of people dislike tofu and many times it is the way that it is prepared. Is it the texture that you don't like? It has no taste of its own but just absorbs the flavor of that around it so marinating it gives it taste. However, the texture is altered if you freeze it prior to cooking...what many people do is throw the tub of tofu in the water and all into the freezer for at least 48 hours...this is for the tubs that have to be refrigerated, not the silken tofu in the aseptic boxes which is also known as Japanese tofu...a whole 'nother creature used for desserts, dressing, sauces since it is smoother. But, back to the other in the tubs that you get in the refrigerated part of the store. Some people drain the water off prior to freezing. You freeze it, drain it, press it (put something heavy on it) to get the water out for maybe 1/2 hour, then cut it up and marinade it. Then you can roast, fry, bake. You can also scramble it like eggs and it is nice...I use the Fantastic Tofu Scrambler. I hated tofu until someone taught me how to cook it. At the store there is also a marinated tofu in a package that you just slice and fry, bake, roast which is a totally different texture than at home. Otherwise there are a ton of recipes out there without tofu. You might want to try seitan and it is in the refrigerated section in the store and is wheat gluten and has the texture of m*#t and has lots of uses. Tempeh is also another thing you could try. Where are you...I mean which country? You could google vegan recipes and pull up a lot of sites. I think if you go into peta.org you will find some sites to go to as they are linked to everything under the sun in the world. Also, do you have an aversion to using processed or packaged foods? There are a lot of packaged foods that can help you out where you don't have to do much cooking and eases you into the art of veganism. We can recommend things that you can try but need to know what country you are in. linda "Whatever you do will be insignificant and it is very important that you do it."Mohandas Gandhi linda's Growing Stitchery Projects: womyn47 - jherbfolk Thursday, December 15, 2005 6:27 PM tofu? hello-i'm new to the group as well as veganism, and was wonderin' if anyone could lead me to a place or book i could find a good collection of recipes without tofu, i just can't get into it. any help would be great. peace.john
