Guest guest
An obligate carnivore must, absolutely must, have meat in order to live. His instinct therefore pushes him to hunt other animals, and if not forthcoming he can survive on plant foods for only a short time. The obligate carnivores entire digestive system and teeth are designed for a being a meat eater, short and to the point, not allowing for the meat to putrefy in their systems. Our domestic cat, even though having been domesticated for thousands of years is still an obligate carnivore and cannot exist on a vegetarian food diet. I am not sure whether we can give them all of the additional nutrients such as taurine to ensure their survival, but I do know that plenty of cats have died or suffered permanent damage from their "master" attempting to feed them a totally vegetarian diet. Bottom line on that issue though to me would be the fact that we are not allowing the obligate carnivore to live as he was designed. Even if our entire digestive system and teeth made us obligate carnivores that still absolutely does not justify our treatment of our farm factoried animals to feed ourselves. That is only occurring due to our demand for cheap meat in order to satisfy our taste buds. Of course we all know that our digestive tracks and teeth prove that we are not obligate carnivores. To border on the inane I have to point out that to be completely consistent in using obligate carnivores in an discussion one would have to point out that one has never seen a lion shoot its prey with a gun or use a bow and arrow. So, I guess that means that we need to chase our prey down, catch them and eat them raw. Sounds interesting. Sounds like we would give that one up and just eat plants, seeds and do what we do now. linda
Guest guest
In the UK there are vegan catfoods, with everything cats need to live a healthy life. I don't know the percentage of cats that actually like the food, but there are vegan cats around. Guest guest
My guess is that less than 5 % of cats would choose it over conventional food, after all its what they are conditioned to expect.
