Guest guest
but amerigo was more well known by his first name, fer some ungodly reason, then by vespucci.... i remember my teacher drillin that into our heads way back when years later..i went and researched it, and every source that mentioned was like " yes, he was an anamoly, he was known in his writings as amerigo " fer some reason, unlike columbus er bloody almost anyone else, he was known by his first name also, amerigo could be latinized into something that ended in an A note..Asia, africa, Australia, Antarctica... Amerigo's writings were VERY well known, he was enormously popular for his time, and his name was on everyone's tongue. he wrote in a scholarly manner, and yet wrote with wit it seemed. ..his letters were compiled(ok, two of em) and titled Novus Mundus..new world...so he was the frst to call it that, when everyone else thought it was still an arm of asia, the Indies er wot have you... the lettters were reprinted ina score of languages... when Martin Waldseemueller and his group, which were almost a 16th century equivalent of a modern think tank, wrote Cosmographiae Introduction, it was written as an update to wot the ancients knew. Since amerigo wrote of this new land, it fit perfectly into their ideas/plans a tad audacious, but, hey, history is written by those who take chances! ya know peter, we argue about the most insane stuff sometimes!! ok..yer turn Peter <metalscarab Nov 23, 2005 3:40 PM Re: Re: FAO Fraggle Beer miester Hi Fraggle > there's drake's bay > the bering straits > hudson bay for henry hudson > lake champlain OK... so, not Francis Bay, Henry Bay, or whatever the other guys first names were > amerigo's writing were quite well known at the time of the 1507 map.... > and, unlike most folks at the time, he actually went by amerigo much more often the vespucchi.... Doesn't matter what name he used... he wasn't a royal, so there was no way that he would have been " honoured " as a royal. Naming a place after his first name would have been tantamount to treason. It just wouldn't have happened at all... and we are talking about a group of monks who lived in the mountains of the Anjou region so that they could get away from the world. The chances that they had come across the writings of Vespucci are fairly low (a large monastic library in the 15th century would have had 40 books - and this is a dinky monastery tucked away in the mountains). Far more likely that they were told about Vespucci by Rene, Duc d'Anjou who was the patron of the work, and not exactly the most reliable source of information. Ummm... only if he was female! The " a " ending in latin denotes a feminine noun. If it was latinised, it would end in " us " . Asia and Africa are named after females (I believe ancient goddesses). I have no idea how Australia and Antarctica got their names. > ya know peter, we argue about the most insane stuff sometimes!!
