Prime Minister Tony Blair needs to get his facts straight - nuclear power is not a sustainable energy source. The UK is not on track to meet the carbon emission targets needed to tackle climate change. In fact, CO2 emissions have increased since Labour came to power, and Tony Blair now finds himself in a vulnerable and unenviable position, desperately seeking a solution. With the Prime Minister ripe for the guiles of the nuclear industry's lobbyists, he seems to have desperately seized upon nuclear power as the default solution - neglecting the fact that nuclear power is not clean, not safe and certainly not sustainable - it is not the answer to real action on climate change. Our seas are being emptied of fish at an alarming rate. Industrial fishing processes are extremely profitable, but are highly destructive and wasteful. Globally 75% of commercial fish stocks are over-exploited and close to collapse. In the UK, we consume £1.8 billion worth of seafood annually. We investigated UK supermarkets and ASDA came in at the bottom of our list, while Tesco and Morrisons also fare poorly, revealing that Britain's biggest retailers are responsible for the destruction of fish stocks. Marks Spencer and Waitrose top the scorecard thanks to their implemented sustainable seafood policies, but nearly all of the UK's major supermarkets are selling endangered and threatened varieties of fish. It's time the supermarkets faced up to their responsibilities and adopted sustainable seafood policies. Read our UK supermarket league table » Take action by telling ASDA to sort out their seafood » BRITAIN SAYS "NO" TO MORE NUCLEAR WEAPONS The majority of people in the UK don't want new nuclear weapons. According to a poll conducted by research company MORI, 54% of the British public oppose the replacement of the current Trident nuclear submarine system through the development of new nuclear weapons. Britain's Trident submarines are being integrated into US global nuclear strike plans and Tony Blair has endorsed a replacement that is conservatively estimated at around £25 billion - equivalent to building over 1,000 new schools. Only 33% of those polled felt this was a price worth paying, while over half disagreed. Nine out of 10 also wanted the issue debated in parliament, or at least a public discussion. Blair needs to be reminded he is a public servant - Trident is an expensive and deadly 'boy's toy' with no possible relevance to the UK in the 21st century. Laura Yates, one of the volunteers said, "We are disappointed to have been found guilty, but we remain proud of highlighting Mr Prescott's failure to act on climate change. This protest aimed to show Mr Prescott and his department how easy it is to drastically reduce the global warming gases pumped out by houses. Mr Prescott admits climate change is 'the most serious environmental threat that the world is facing' and says everybody must 'do their bit' - why doesn't he do his?"
