Women who drink colas have hypertension risk, but coffee is OK

Category: Women's Health/OBGYN News

Article 09 Nov 2005

If you are a woman and love drinking coffee, you need not worry about

the coffee raising your blood pressure, but caffeinated colas might,

say researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital and the Harvard

School of Public Health. They found no link between drinking coffee

and hypertension.

Lead researcher, Wolfgang Winkelmayer, said `We found strong evidence

to refute speculation that coffee consumption is associated with an

increased risk of hypertension in women.'

The researchers looked at 33,077 cases of high blood pressure among

women. This was part of a study on over one hundred and fifty

thousand women who took part in the Nurses Health Study.

They did find a link between caffeinated cola drinking and high blood

pressure. They also added that the link was still there even if the

cola was a diet one.

Only caffeinated colas and coffee were looked at in this study - not

other types of soft drinks.

The researchers think that perhaps there is some other chemical in

the cola, rather than the caffeine, which is causing the

hypertension.

You can read about this study in the Journal of the American Medical

Association.

One sixth of the whole American population suffer from hypertension.
