They found no link between drinking coffee and hypertension. Lead researcher, Wolfgang Winkelmayer, said `We found strong evidence to refute speculation that coffee consumption is associated with an increased risk of hypertension in women.' The researchers looked at 33,077 cases of high blood pressure among women. This was part of a study on over one hundred and fifty thousand women who took part in the Nurses Health Study. They did find a link between caffeinated cola drinking and high blood pressure. They also added that the link was still there even if the cola was a diet one. Only caffeinated colas and coffee were looked at in this study - not other types of soft drinks. The researchers think that perhaps there is some other chemical in the cola, rather than the caffeine, which is causing the hypertension. You can read about this study in the Journal of the American Medical Association. One sixth of the whole American population suffer from hypertension.
