hi jonnie,

I have a bunch of jewish/yiddish words in my head from

grwoing up in manhattan. I had a jewish babysitter and

some picked up from neighbors.

I loved that old man, he introduced me to a lot of books

between the ages of 8-12, but then he moved or I got older.. This was

on 163rd st. and fort washington

He sounded like a cross, between bugs bunny (pronouncing the oi, as

in goils for girls and thoisday for thursday)

the three stooges( the noive= the nerve) and woody allen.

He is probably dead now as he was old back then, his apartment

must've been

a fire department hazard.

cause I couldn't see a trace o walls. All his walls were covered with

dusty books everywheres. (Newspapers, from

thirty years ago) a real character.

I think that I had selective mutism, because I remember just

listening, or not assimilated yet.

I believe these words are more commonplace now, as sometimes I

heard them in movies and tv.

probably are yiddish, or I should say Yinglish or Hebrew (not sure

which),

some jewish woids. basically, if you have to say schl or schm

it's probably jewish. My mom still lives right next to Jeshiva Jewish

University.

shmuck - jerk

tuchas - butt

mazel tov - good fortune!

babushka- head covering on a grandma

chutzpah- nerve

gezunheit- good health

meshugene- crazy, idiot

schlemazel- unlucky

schlemiel - loser

schlep - to carry

schlump- bad posture

schmaltz- sentimentality

schmooze - to hang out with intimately

shmutz- a low person

schnook - crook

schpiel - when you feed someome a story

schtick -

zhlub - slob

yenta-

cacamamie- silly

klutz-clumsy

Hi Anouk

Now that's interesting on a few:

shmuck - jerk

- I never knew it was an actual word. Just thought it slang. lol

babushka- head covering on a grandma

- means the same thing in Polish

gezunheit- good health

- Means the same thing in German - used as we use " god bless you "

after sneezing

Nikki - part Polish, have German gramma
