Guest guest
We need to go pick Deanna up and go shopping at the thrift shops. I have a very expensive KitchenAid toaster and I paid $5 for it. I doubt is was used more than a few times. I fill large muffin tins with whatever is left over and freeze it. I either FoodSaver them or put each in its own freezer bag and place it all into another larger freezer bag for organization. This comes in handy anytime! As far as how much I paid for it and where did I get it? Well, most of my appliances come from thrift stores. This rice cooker was all but brand new with directions, a rice paddle and measuring cup for $3.99. The same with my George Forman grill. I have the next to the smallest one, $2.99...a good bath and it looked like new! Blender $2.99, food processor $10 and my bestest find in the world...my brand new 8 quart Presto Pressure Cooker ($6.99)! I have saved a bundle of money buying this way and only ever had one item that didn't perform the way it should. I took the fall on that $2.99 loss but hey...why not? I just bought a really nice juicer (the one that goes around and around not the one that makes juice from carrots etc) for $1.99. I have arthritis in my hands and it makes my life sooo much easier. Now, if I can find a grain mill! Just last weekend, my 2 sisters and I were at a yard sale. My sister has been looking for a meat (gasp) grinder for her KitchenAide mixer. Low and behold, there was a box of mixed kitchen appliances/utensils sitting in a box shoved under a table. My sister started to look through the box and realized a whole complete grinder was in there amongst other things. It was not labeled with a price and when she asked, she got the entire box for $2!! Talk about a bargain! They run about $45 new! I was the lucky one for her find, I got all the utensils and measuring cups etc to add to my camping box. This method of acquiring appliances and things I need have worked very well for me over the past 30 years. My food processor cost me $10 about 10 years ago. Its a Kenmore and it runs like a champ. I would LOVE a Cuisinart. I will never buy one new but hope to find one gently used on one of my bargain hunts. Just thought these suggestions might make it easier for hubby to swallow when you come walking in the door with that rice cooker. ;o) Good luck! Guest guest
This topic certainly has my mouth watering. My favourite sandwich is a Reuben made with Montreal Smoked Wheat - is that available in the US? I even looked at grills today but unfortunately there were so many choices that I came away empty handed. Geo Forman has 5 different sizes in the local store. I know I don't want the teeny tiny one and I sure don't want the huge one but the 3 in the middle each had features that I liked. I will probably go with the second smallest as it would be handier for me. I have never grilled a sandwich in other than a fry pan so this will be a new experience for me. The only question I have, and you must remember I am a beginner at this, it seems that some of the grills have very heavy lids and heavy grill ridges as well. I'm used to flat sandwiches and wonder what they are like from the GF grill. Please don't laugh at the question, although I am. I sound like a rank amateur and I've been cooking meals for over 50 years but just in the 'same old' way. A rice cooker is next on my list and I'd like to know which size most people find appropriate. I am getting a bit of a 'crank' from my DH. He can see this as another appliance that will gather dust. He doesn't know that I am finished cooking meat for him and going to make veggie food only for a while. I am printing out recipes, stocking the pantry with things to tempt him and gearing up for the cooler weather. Thanks Audrey

Guest guest
When I got a George Foreman last spring I got the smallest size, then returned it the next day for the next size up, then returned that one yet again for the next to the biggest one. It's been used practically every day since. It was originally supposed to be for hubby who always wanted one to make a panini sandwich with, but he went onto a carb conscious kick just before I got the grill. Ended up with me being the one who uses it all the time and I never was a sandwich girl before. Now I can't live without my sandwich for lunch (panini style anyway) and appreciate all the sandwich fixin ideas here. As for the ridges I worried about that too before buying but it doesn't seem to make a difference but then I've never had a panini maker before to compare. However it might matter where cheese's concerned as it oozes right on out (I don't use it on mine but sometimes do for hubby and kids so that's been a concern and eventually figured out it works good to add the cheese after grilling). As for the rice cooker, it's been another surprise staple that has been used a few times a week for a couple years now and not just for rice (beans, chili, vegs, etc). I guess I'd go with whatever size feels appropriate for your needs. But then on the other hand there's one that I've been eyeing for a while at Sam's but wasn't too sure about its big size. Perhaps some day I'll cave in and just get it. Kate -- Audrey Z Burrows Sender: Reply Sep 22, 2007 2:22 PM Re: favourite sandwiches/ rice cooker This topic certainly has my mouth watering. Guest guest
Here is the Breadman Panini Grill that I have. I love it. I can make 4 sandwiches at a time and they are done quick, toasted so crisp and nice. http://www.amazon.com/Breadman-TR456-Panini-Maker/dp/B00008PC7M This is a good price on Amazon and they offer the free shipping and there is no sales tax. I paid $15 more than this at Target and had to drive there and pay tax...... Wish I had looked on Amazon first. LOL. I grilled some thick onions and pepper slices on it recently and they were great. I sprinkled some Ms. Dash on them before I closed it on them. One of my girls made a Quesada in it today. She used the Kraft shredded cheese that has the chipotle Seasoning in it and some fresh basil leaves. She used Whole Wheat soft Tortilla. After it was cooked she spread a thin layer of sour cream on it.Yummmmmm Judy - Audrey Z Burrows Saturday, September 22, 2007 2:22 PM Re: favourite sandwiches/ rice cooker This topic certainly has my mouth watering. Guest guest
Donna and Audrey, Yes !! Stop by and pick me up for the shopping trip to the thrift stores. Most have heard about my Pampered Chef stone ware find but another of my favorites was at a rural barn sale. In a large, what I believe to be an antique porcelain stock kettle was a bunch of kitchen utensils..Yep I collect those too. The sign said " all for $2 " ..I asked if I could buy the kettle also and she said " sure take all for $2 " . I am still thrilled over that find. The stock kettle is in almost perfect condition. It now has the honor of holding my antique kitchen utensils. Deanna in Colorado also at recycled_gardens (Recycle and Think Green) ********************************************************************** , thelilacflower wrote: > > We need to go pick Deanna up and go shopping at the thrift shops.
