Guest guest
Hi, I am new to your group and I'm really enjoying all your posts and recipes. I began making the transition to vegetarianism in January of this year for the strict purpose of becoming a more healthy being. I have lost 60 pounds and have about 40 more to lose. There is big time diabetes and heart disease in my family. My husband works in Californis and comes home to Colorado on weekends. He does a great job of eating whatever I place before him and while it's not vegetarian, it does include PLENTY of fruits and veggies with some whole grains and lean meats. When he's in California working however, he eats horribly. I check the online banking every night and at least once a day there is a debit at some fast food joint. I beg him to go shopping and keep healthy things to snack on around our place in Cali, but he just won't do it. It's easier to go out and grab something fast. He is 20 years older than I am so I NEED him to live until he's about 110. LOL ... I have 16 year old twins who have an open campus at their high school and they eat fast food for lunch almost every day. While they are home, my son is more willing to eat the way I do, but my daughter is a bit more difficult. She loves raw veggies...bell peppers, snap peas, broccoli, tomatoes...etc...but she will couple that with whatever her boyfriend brings over from McDonald's. If he's not around, she will go to the store and buy packaged and processed foods for herself. Considering I began this whole lifestyle change when they were 15, I certainly don't expect miracles, but this is way more difficult than I ever expected it would be. I have trained myself to see food as a source of fuel, and nothing more, so we don't do dinner parties anymore, we don't go out much. Eating has always been such a huge social event for us and now I don't know how to help my family stop pickling themselves. Thanks so much for letting me be a part of your group. I am looking forward to ANY and ALL suggestions. Georgette Nystrom
Guest guest
Welcome, Georgette! And congrats on the weight loss!! I so hear you. I have been a vegetarian for over 30 years, but I wasn't a healthy vegetarian for most of that time. (I've heard the term " vege-junk-etarian " and that was me.) I switched to a vegan diet in January for health reasons and I'm now _much_ healthier. I have lost 75 lbs and need to lose another 30, but I've plateaued for the last 3 months. (And it's getting old, let me tell you. I've even joined a gym and I go every day.) I have two daughters, ages 12.5 and almost 15. The youngest is vegetarian, happy to eat very healthy and she has also lost weight this year. My eldest is determined to eat lots of meat (especially fried), processed junk, sweets, and other garbage. Thing is, she's a bunhead (she's in a pre-professional ballet program), so she's _very_ thin and not very motivated to change her eating. I'm concerned about her stamina, resistance to illness, and the like, but she is SO stubborn. Wish I had been into healthy eating when she was younger and more malleable!
