Guest guest
Wow Hiliary. You are an international grocery shopper. How wonderful to be close to all those places and get to enjoy them. I enjoyed reading about your choices of places to shop. Farmer's Markets are such a wonderful resource. It is great that you have many set up often there. We have a couple of produce stands that are up, 6 days a week. The owners buy from the local farmers and backyard growers, to sell in their stands, during the summer. They buy from the State Farmer's Market docks during the winter and for things that aren't grown in this area. Then they bring it back to sell at their stands. I live in Germany, out in the Country near the Luxembourg border. We are blessed in this area to have fairly frequent street markets which always include a great variety of fresh produce, fresh egg pasta, and more. Some towns have them once a month, but others twice weekly. The best selection is at the twice-weekly farmer's market in Luxembourg City (Especially the man with 30 vaireties of mushrooms!) but is also has by far the highest prices. The 'health foods' stores in this area don't usually have enough traffic to be able to carry a lot of fresh produce. those that do are in pedestrianized downtown districts, and I have difficulty carrying, as I walk with 1/2-crutches. There are a couple of farms near us that have shops in them. One of the shops is run by the family's Grandma - every time I go in there she is in the act of pulling something aromatic and decadent-looking out of the oven! Our local grocers have good selections of 'bio' foods available, and the regular lines are good too, since there is a strong anti-GM food movement, and German farmers don't rely nearly as much on artificial fertilisers and pesticides as in other parts of the world. I do go occasionally to Belgium, France, Luxembourg and Holland for groceries - from where I live it's practical!! Especially if I take girlfriends with me!
