Guest guest
I live in Norfolk, Virginia. I shop at the commissary (I really hate the commissary!) . I am pretty new to the area, so I don't know of any good places to get vegetarian items, or really good fruits and vegetables for that matter. The commissary's selection on produce is absolutely horrible! I'm also new to the whole vegetarian idea, so I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to the various meat-free items. I'd like a store in the area that is knowledgeable, and can answer questions I have regarding things like TVP, and tofu, and all the other things I've never heard of or know how to cook. Anyone around here know of places? Thank you, -Mia-
Guest guest
Mia, It might be a little drive for you, but if you ever go to Richmond, there's a place just west of there on Hwy 360 called Chesterfield Berry Farm and Market. You can't miss it. They let you pick your own of various things like pumpkins at certain times of the year, and their market is wonderful. They sell all kinds of produce and even have signs up letting you know where the produce was grown if not on their farm. They also sell all kinds of jams and jellies and local honey. They must have about 20 kinds of peppers for sell right now, and you can even buy tomatoes, cucumbers, and squash in bulk at a cheaper price for pickling and canning. If you ever travel towards the mountains, there are lots of orchards and farmers markets out there too. As for the rest, try googling " health food stores " or " natural food stores " in Norfolk or Virginia and see what you come up with. I found one in Lynchburg (near where I live) that way. I know there are at least a couple in Richmond, but not sure about near the coast. I've also found a coop farm in Lynchburg and an organic farm just minutes from me, so doing a search online might reveal something like that too. It also helps to look at the classifieds of your local paper for farm listings also. I'm not sure what grocery stores you have near you, but Kroger is pretty big out here and they have a good health food section with all kinds of vegetarian selections, and I've been told Ukrops in Richmond is good too. There are also a couple of Whole Foods stores in Virginia, but they may only be up north and out west.
