Has anyone raised veggie kids? How do you get enough protein into them?

WHat about eating out? What about friends houses? Any ideas?

I'm a 3rd generation vegetarian, raising a 4th generation.

Protein is in almost all food. We enjoy all using the meat substitutes from

Worthington, Loma Linda, Cedar Lake and Morningstar Farms. They are wonderful.

You can find them for sale in health food stores, many internet websites, some

larger grocery stores(Morningstar farms is in most all), Adventist Book Centers

world wide(they have the best selections including the frozen products).

I most recently have been purchasing them by the case off of www.amazon.com

where they have great prices, free shipping and no sales tax. They arrive

within the week. Sometimes it is hard to find them on the Amazon search bar, so

I Google it and type in " ----------- on Amazon " and it I get the direct link to

find it. I substitute these items and can make most any recipe in my cookbooks,

using them. Since they are basically already cooked, preparation is very quick

using these products.

Here is a good article on protein in the vegetarian diet and contains a chart

that shows the protein content of Veggies, nuts, grains, fruit.....

http://www.vrg.org/nutrition/protein.htm

Spinach is loaded with protein.

We don't need nearly as much protein as most folks thing however. Too much is

hard on the kidneys, causes us to pee out our calcium, making bones weaker and

accerates aging.

I never worry about protein it is in almost everything. I worry more about B's

and iron for my boys.

Honestly - people who raise their kids vegetarian worry so much about

their kids nutrition. Yet people who load their kids up with artery

clogging meat and cheese don't. First things first - stop worrying. I'm

raising both of my kids vegetarian. They are very healthy and eat a

great variety of vegetarian foods. They love beans, tofu, soy " meat "

alternative products, soy milk, peanut butter, nuts, seeds, etc. When I

told my pediatrician I was raising them vegetarian he said they were

probably eating much healthier than their peers. I couldn't agree more.

When we go out to eat it's never a problem because go someplace that has

vegetarian options to begin with. It's also not a problem when we go to

other people's house. They all know we are all vegetarian and they

respect that. They offer vegetarian food and other parents always check

with me to make sure it's something they can have before they ever offer

it.

Great question!! My problem is that my son, 4, is programmed already

to like McDonald's, meat, and milk. He'll eat veggie burgers and

hotdogs, but he won't do soymilk.

I don't think protein will be much of an issue for your kids. I'm

having a hard time getting a varied diet in them. My son is very

picky. I wish I would have never let myself be bullied out of raising

him vegan. Are you getting family support? I think that is so

important. My MIL thought I was abusing my son. I hope you don't have

to deal with that.

Melissa,

Although our youngest daughter is the only child

vegetarian in our home, I did ensure the other

children did not eat hotdogs, birthday cake, bread,

etc., at other people's homes when they were younger.

Our son has tourrette's, OCD and ADHD. I needed to

keep him on an all natural diet. I'm sure behind my

back people thought I was bizarre, but hey, if they

weren't talking about me, they were talking about

someone else. Those close to me knew I had a good

reason for my choices.

In any case, I have always brought my own food to

other people's homes. I told them my husband would be

delighted to share their meal with them, however, due

to my dietary choice, I didn't want to stress them

out, but I absolutely wanted to share their company

through a meal. Several friends have actually since

chosen to make simple vegetarian meals and invite us

over. It does make it easier because I am not vegan.

Our youngest daughter is almost 16 years old. We keep

seasoned tofu burgers in the fridge. She grabs one

whenever she is invited to a friend's house. She'll

eat their veggies, but just barbeques or grills her

own burger instead. She goes out with her friends for

pizza, and has veggie pizza on whole wheat thin crust

with 1/2 the cheese. Her friends don't even notice.

Emily went to the States (we're Canadian) with my mom

to go shopping. I told my mother not to nag her about

her food choices. She ate a lot of salad, french

toast, a bean burrito, a veggie sub, etc. I have

always stressed to her she needs to eat green veggies

and a well rounded variety of foods to keep her iron

and zinc levels up. Protein is the least of my

worries.

Good luck!
