Guest guest
Hi Judy, There is a lot of info on the web for Malabar spinach, if you google for it. A lot of seed selling sites have it for ~$2.00 a pack. I bought some from Park seeds, along with some other types, for a little less. The gold-foil packs are undated but I put eight seeds in a wet folded paper towel and they all seemed to germinate. The seeds start the size of dark bb's but swell up to pearl-size and bleed red-purple (amazingly) like a cheap dye coming out of a garment(!). I'm waiting for my seedlings now and only have one so far in less than a week. I don't think it is (supposed to be?) a particular cold-weather climber. My strategy was to let it tolerate the (non-frosty) winters at my house when regular spinach and kale should do well, and then carry on for the warmer seasons. Check out the nutrition info. Wow! Let it get man-sized and even truck-sized and it will be a lot more useful than some of the big-ol' bushes I have to wrestle around here. http://www.bbg.org/gar2/topics/kitchen/2006su_spinach.html http://www.nutritiondata.com/facts-C00001-01c20nB.html http://tinyurl.com/yrnb8g or <<http://www.parkseed.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StoreCatalogDisplay?storeId=\ 10101 & catalogId=10101 & langId=-1 & mainPage=prod2working & ItemId=5660 & PrevMainPage=t\ extsearchresults & scChannel=Text%20Search & SearchText=spinach & OfferCode=TH1>> , " wwjd " <jtwigg wrote: > > Slim this is interesting about the climbing spinach. I'll have to look for seeds for that kind. Did you have to mail order them. I have several trellis for climbing veggies that go unused in the cooler months so this really interests me, as well as growing more in less space. Thanks for sharing the info you have found out about. > Judy > - > slim_langer > > > I got the idea just recently of trying to grow some greens around the > house. (!?!) Guest guest
Thanks so much Slim. I'm going to enjoy browsing these sites. I hope more of your seeds sprout soon and you have an abundant crop. Yeah about the added bonus of great nutrition.
