Feds Give Authorization to San Diego to Wipe Out theSeals in LaJolla, California Tue, 18 Oct 2005 12:01:14 -0700Feds Give Authorization to San Diego to Wipe Out theSeals in LaJolla,California The Seal Haters have won a victory in SanDiego and the NationalMarine Fisheries Service has given writtenauthorization to the City of SanDiego to remove the the seals off the beach at LaJolla permanently underSection 109(h) of the MMPA. The City has apparentlytold NMFS they wantpermanent removal of the seals. No permit will berequired, and removalcould begin tomorrow. NMFS suggested in strong termsthat if the City wasplanning to do the dredging during the pupping season,the seals should begotten rid of by November 1. The writtenauthorization from NMFS wasplanned, in collusion with City officials, onSeptember 16th in a closedmeeting in Long Beach. This means that the last seal rookery inSouthern California hasbeen removed to make way for the convenience of morepeople. According to marine mammal scientist JimHudnall, "The use of109(h) to authorize the destruction of an entire sealrookery is absurd andprobably illegal, but obviously in keeping with thetimes and the roguenature of our current Federal and City government. The question is, what dowe do about this? My suggestion: start screaming, anyway you know how. Besure you are well armed with documents for the media.
