Guest guest
Hi peter, I COMPLETELY disagree with you. I don't believe that the roots of Jazz coming from New Orleans has ever been disputed, being that they where playing this type of music there, long before it being popular in the rest of America, that is before the 1920's. Blues, was develope out of the sad songs, made up of the memories of years of slavery. These situations, where happening in America, not Africa. Gospel, Drum expressions, rhytmic expressions came out of the experiences of NEW WORLD slavery. In a way Jazz, Ragtime and blues happened BECAUSE of slavery. There is no Bourbon st. in Africa, There is no Harlem in Africa. These were Am erican situations, very unique to the South Plantation states, but also occuring in saloons cities like st.louis and baltimore. to say that jazz isn't american is like saying that samba isn't from brazil. rumba, mambo isn't cuban, and plena/bomba isn't puerto rican and reggae isn't jamaican. all of these had african roots, but their UNIQUe sounds, that is, what identifies them as such, occured specifically in these countries. slaves had been calling themselves Americans since the 1740s, regardless of their inequalities with their white masters. Gospel, was expresse in American churches. the people that started ragtime music(precursor to jazz) in the 1890's had been in american for a good one hundred years. slavery was abolished in 1865, and the music coming from that particular culture was Endemic to the south and the hardships that they faced in the south. the circumstances that give birth to a particular kind of music, has a lot to do with what is happening in that culture, at a specific time, in that specific decade. The slaves of Africa came from many different tribes, as varied as the many different tribes of the Native american Indians, therefore, had very little in common with each other and where distintly different, as diverse as africa itself. except for the fact that they where slaves. Which was a UNIQUELY American situation. At least six tribes, this was done on purpose. Music that is immensely popular today, such as, Reggaeton, and new Bachata could not have happened in any other decade but this one and is unique to immigrant groups in specific cities. they are a distortion of african rhtyms but are not AFRICAN. Music is Social, Political, Circumstancial, Specific, Evolving !!! -anouk , peter hurd <swpgh01@t...> wrote: > It is said that the blues were born out of the plantations/cotton fields/slavery, with most (all) the slaves coming from Africa, using African, phrasing / music as a starter. > > The Valley Vegan............ > > Jonnie Hellens <jonnie_hellens> wrote: > Wait, I thought R & B/The Blues had it's origin here in the states? > > peter hurd <swpgh01@t...> wrote: I suppose technically it could be argued that rock n roll had its roots in R & B/The blues which has its origins to another continent......etc, etc. So I have to be pedantic and say NO!
