I don't mind folks thinking it's rude of me to challenge their sloppy

language, but I'd like to be clear why I think it's important for me to

challenge sloppy language when I see it.

I think it's important for us, especially if we want to be taken

seriously, to say what we mean. If we mean " harmful chemicals " , we should

say that. I already spend a good portion of my life explaining why vegan

doesn't mean I can eat fish; I don't need people thinking I think

everything that's made from chemicals is harmful.

Hi Serene

I think the important thing about language is that it should be understood

by everyone - and when people talk of " the use of chemicals " , it is standard

short-hand for " the use of harmful chemicals " . Much like we rarely refer to

" the pianoforte " anymore.

However, since it's important to you:

> I already spend a good portion of my life explaining why vegan

> doesn't mean I can eat fish; I don't need people thinking I think

> everything that's made from chemicals is harmful.

That should be " ...why vegan means that I can not eat fish " . The way you've

put it suggests that being vegan has no bearing on whether or not you can

eat fish. Incidentally, the semi-colon is also incorrectly used. Ideally you

should use a full stop since the two statements do not appear to be related.

If you did mean them to be related, it should be a colon.

Not that I care too much since your meaning is clear, but I thought you

might want to know so that you don't repeat the mistakes in the future.

*looks in vegan chat manual*

hmmm...page 3283 of the yellow section, subsection G, clearly has precedence in

this matter

it sez

" Winky winky tigger tiger winky doo "

there

i think that explains the issue nicely

As far as I am aware there are no rules on this list to say that we all have

to reach certain standards of intelligence or speech - just that we remain

polite to each other.

While you do indeed have a fine point, I'd like to point you in the

direction of Appendix 947, section 12, subsection F, paragraph 4, which

clearly states: " Hoopla diddly nang nang ziggle wop " , which I feel must take

precedence here.

I find you going on about using a colon, analy retentive.

What about use of the appendix?

Must go, I seem to have split my infinitive! must change them for a new pair.

Ah geez, I don't want to be nitpicky, but ANY chemical can be a harmful

chemical. And, clarity in language is only a problem when someone " uses a

word in a manner not generally understood in the context used. "

I don't think anyone misunderstood what Jo was saying.

Look Serene,

Some of us take offence (and possibly the gate as well ), at being taken seriously. I have spent many years perfecting this image of buffonery, indeed such a cunning disguise is it that it would beat a weasel in national cunning week.

What, you mean that they haven't got the new international hand book out to

the US members yet? I dunno, just how slow can the distribution department

be? I blame Nikki - I'm sure she programmed the evil twins in that
