Hi All, it's good to keep this letter handy so we can get ideas to enlighten those who need it. Adela CROSS POST ** CROSS POST

The following is a letter that appears in today's (8/31) Arizona Republic. It addresses the controversy surrounding the plans of Covance Laboratories to move into Chandler and resume its practice of animal testing. It reads:

ANIMAL TESTING INHERENTLY VIOLENT AND UNETHICAL>> In "Animal testing has far-reaching benefits for humans," Aug. 23, you> assert that animal testing can be done "humanely," yet caution that> PETA's video of Covance's animal testing is "not for the squeamish." If> humane, why is it difficult to watch? Perhaps because it reveals> appalling suffering imposed on sentient beings capable of experiencing> terror and pain.>> Mark Twain once said and it bears repeating, "I am not interested to> know whether vivisection produces results that are profitable to the> human race or doesn't...The pain which it inflicts upon unconsenting> animals is the basis of my enmity toward it, and it is to me sufficient> justification of the enmity without looking further.">> Animal testing tends to be irrelevant to human health. Diseases that> are artificially produced in laboratory animals are never identical to> those that occur naturally in humans. And because animal species differ> biologically, it becomes even more unlikely that animal research will> yield results beneficial to humans.>> Animal experimentation is an inherently violent and unethical practice> that all taxpayers unwittingly support through government grants and> funding. Only when consumers begin to demand that funding for medical> research be redirected into the use of clinical, in vitro and> computer-modeling studies instead of laboratory experiments on animals> will this senseless cruelty end.>> -Ro Pernelli,> Glendale>
