on my lunch break walked over to Cody's books(how sad is that..i work for book

publishers..and..on my lunchbreak..i got and look at..books...) and a new title

caught my eye

The Monster at our Door

i didn't buy it, as i'm broke, and currently swamped with many more books then i

can read fer awhile

but..thought since this was yer current interest i'd mention it

and of course fer everyone else as well

Avian influenza is a viral asteroid on a collision course with humanity. In

1918, a pandemic strain of influenza killed at least 40 million people in three

months. The World Health Organization wanrs that this new virus is on the verge

of mutating into a super-contagious pandemic form that could visit several

billion homes, and kill up to 100 million people, within two years. In this

urgent and frightening book, Mike Davis reconstructs the scientific and

political history of a viral apocalypse in the making, explsing the central

roles of burgeoning slums, agribusiness, the fast-food industries, and corrupt

governments in creaing the ecological conditions for the emergence of this new

plague. With masterful strokes, Davis constructs the all too human footprint

that capitalism leaves on ecology, and the 'natural' disasters that follow in

its wake.

Who can afford to drive now-a-days!?

Besides, when we were young, you walked everywhere! Kids are so

spoiled these days.

Zak and DH walk to and from school which is about a 15-20 minute

walk each way. The only days he'll get a ride is in really bad

weather.

My neighbors and I are currently fighting to get our street turned

into a cul-de-sac. Our street runs for 2 blocks and that is it. When

we walked around the first time with the petition, one neighbor said

and I quote " Then how will I get to the gas station on the corner? " .

Um, walk? Or drive one block around.

Talk about laziness! This was a young guy too!
