Peter is coming to the States soon - Washington and Wilmington. As you all

know, we don't have to even think about poisonous insects here as we don't

really have any. What might he have to look out for in these areas?

West Nile from mosquitoes. Spiders. (Brown Recluse

http://www.sciencenewsforkids.org/articles/20031112/Note2.asp and Black

Widows http://entomology.unl.edu/images/spiders/blkwidow1.jpg) Hornets,

yellowjackets and wasps. Fire ants. Chiggers. Ticks and Lyme Disease. Is

he going to be in town or out in the boonies?

Well, I was going to write " don't know about scorpions on the East Coast "

but doing a search turned up quite a few. So here's one more one has to be

careful of http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/ent/notes/Urban/scorpion.htm

We have lots of poisonous snakes. Here's a link for most of them

http://trailquest.net/SNpoi.html Click on the links about the Cottonmouth,

Eastern Coral and a couple of the rattlesnakes.

Crikes Lynda. Thanks for the links - a bit scary. Are these animals likely

to be a problem in the town part of Washington or Cheverley, North Carolina,

or Wilmington - or is it more if you are out in the wilds?

Re: Poisonous insects

I don't know Fraggle - America is a big scary place to me - well an unknown

quantity anyway.

My South African friends at work all get terrified of spiders - they are so

used to poisonous ones that when they see one of our harmless ones they jump

up on a table, out of habit I guess.

My trouble is I've not travelled much - only in Europe.

I know he'll be alright really. Peter will tell you that I always try to

find out all the ins and outs of places ahead of time - and I've always been

a worrier. You can imagine how I felt when my daughter telephoned to say

she was off to America to meet someone she'd been playing games with on the

internet! She had a lovely time.

Peter would have liked to come and see you. This visit was a surprise

really as a friend is getting married. If he wasn't nearing the end of his

course he probably would have planned to stay longer and travel further

afield. If ever I can afford to travel that far we'd loe to come to see

you.

He's going to NC also and half that state is swamp <g> And I asked if he

was staying in the city or not. I mean, didn't someone say he was into

hiking?

As to DC, well, in that case, I forgot to warn her it is the two-legged

critters that are poisonous!

The mosquitoes are a problem this time of year. It is muggy where he is

going and muggy equals mosquito heaven.

In the country is where you find the snakes and scorpions. Some parks also.

The spiders have specific likes and dislikes.

Why darlin, why ever would I want repellent. I want to talk to one!

What we need up here is mountain lion, coyote, bear, bobcat and fox

repellent! Those walk right up on the deck.

Well, actually, other folks want that. I talk to the critters. What I

don't like is those blooming pine beetles. Big (4-6 " long 2-3 " across),

dumb, ugly things.

DH has sisters in NC, I have friends there. They live in the cities and the

spiders are a seen there.

Could be that is why Channel 3 in Wilmington ran a story on them

http://www.wwaytv3.com/global/story.asp?s=1230622

As a mummy myself, I always liked the old saying " better safe than sorry "

when sending the kidlets off to the wilds of where ever.
