Guest guest
Global Warming at my Door Step ! Heat threatening drinking water (in Montreal) The warmer weather could be endangering Montreal's drinking water. As many as eight water intake points along Lake St-Louis are threatened by lower water levels. They serve almost 500,000 people. Researchers at Environment Canada and the University of Quebec at Montreal are keeping an eye on the situation. They say that lower water levels mean higher concentrations of contaminants, making water more expensive to treat. http://cfcf12.ca/cfcf/news/cfcf#news_3636 Laval risks water shortage Last updated Aug 10 2005 01:29 PM EDT CBC News The heat wave that has gripped the island of Montreal and surrounding areas for most of the summer has forced some municipalities to ration water. City says taps won't run dry if residents don't wash their cars or water their lawns City says taps won't run dry if residents don't wash their cars or water their lawns Water levels in the Mille-îles River have dropped by as much as three feet. Three treatment plants linked to the river provide water for more than 100,000 residents. Municipalities such as Laval, Repentigny, Terrebonne, Rosemere, Lorraine and Bois-des-Filion are affected. Authorities have issued various warnings to citizens about their water use. " We are just asking people to reduce the consumption and not to water their lawn and wash their car, " says Jean Claude Beaudry of the city of Laval. " If so, the pressure and the production of the drinking water should be OK for the population of Laval. " Although there are no fines for people caught watering their lawns, Beaudry says he hopes people respect the rules. Other municipalities are taking a harder stance. In Terrebonne, for example, city officials issued a watering ban Tuesday, and residents risk fines from $100 to $1,000 if caught watering their lawns or washing their cars. http://montreal.cbc.ca/regional/servlet/Vi...er20050810
