My mother always used to tell me, don't get mad, get even - and I intend to. Last week I asked you to write to Congress and oppose the energy bill. More than 17,000 of you did just that, and I want to truly thank you. But unfortunately, Congress passed the energy bill, and I have to tell you, it's one of the worst pieces of legislation I've ever seen. This energy bill is a triple cocktail of seismic testing, subsidies to build new nuclear power plants and pay-offs for fossil-fuel dinosaurs like ExxonMobil. A new report released today by our Exxpose Exxon coalition documents just how much Exxon stands to gain from this bill. Just this morning, coaliton activists protested the energy bill by placing two oil derricks in front of the White House. Congress may have ignored our wishes, but Exxon can't ignore us if we pinch it on its bottom line.

Take Action! It's time to turn the tables on Exxon.

Last week, ExxonMobil released its earnings report for the second quarter. In a time of steep gas prices, Exxon has broken all profit records. Don't buy Exxon gas and tell Exxon's CEO that your money won't be part of its next earnings report. Thank you, Lisa FinaldiCampaigns Director P.S. Fishing for Trouble I wrote to you a couple of weeks ago about a little fish in big trouble: the menhaden. Well, a lot has happened in just two short weeks. Last week, I joined dozens of people on the Chesapeake Bay - but we weren't just there to enjoy the weather. We formed the first ever floating protest in front of Omega Protein's factory fishing plant in Reedville, Virginia. We sent a strong message to Omega, but I'm so happy to say, you sent an even stronger message. More than 15,500 of you have called for a moratorium on factory fishing by Omega! I want to thank you for your help, and your strong support of a little fish. You can do even more to help. Storm Warnings Intensify As this season’s hurricanes slam into our coastlines, MIT scientists have hit us with a dose of reality: global warming is to blame. If you thought that hurricanes were occurring more often and with greater damage, it hasn’t been your imagination. And the most distressing news is it’s only going to get worse. According to a study published by Massachusetts Institute of Technology this week, global warming is likely a major cause of the increased ferocity of hurricanes in the past decade. The study, published in the journal Nature, notes the accumulated power of hurricanes has more than doubled in the past 30 years, with a particularly dramatic spike since 1995. The study should prove particularly interesting for residents along the Gulf Coast and throughout the Caribbean who are recovering from what forecasters call the most active start to the hurricane season on record.
