Guest guest
Scientists are Seeing More Dead Birds, Fewer Fish onthe Pacific CoastAugust 02, 2005 — By Associated PressSAN FRANCISCO — Marine biologists are seeingmysterious and disturbing things along the Pacific Coast of the USA this year:higher water temperatures, plummeting catches of fish, lots of dead birds on thebeaches, and perhaps most worrisome, very little plankton -- thetiny organisms that are a vital link in the ocean food chain. Is this just one freak year? Or is this globalwarming? Few scientists are willing to blame global warming, the theory that carbon dioxide and other manmade emissions aretrapping heat in the Earth's atmosphere and causing a worldwide rise intemperatures. Yet few are willing to rule it out. "There are strange things happening, but we don'treally understand how all the pieces fit together," said Jane Lubchenco, azoologist and climate change expert at Oregon State University."It's hard to say whether any single event is just an anomaly or a realindication of something serious happening." Scientists say things could very well swing back tonormal next year. But if the phenomenon proves to be long-lasting, theconsequences could be serious for birds, fish and other wildlife. Guest guest
Wow, why am I not surprised that this person is from Oregon. Same folks who refused to help stop the loose of water in the Klamath and who couldn't understand the algae bloom or the thousands of dead salmon. Hmmmm, large hydro-electric dam, all the water going to farms, all farms on "recovered" high desert, tons of fertiler leaching into the river and they can't understand what is happening. Wanna bet the lack of plankton is within the bloom area created at the mouth of the Klamath? Wanna bet the lack of fish is because of the thousands that died a couple of years ago? Add the *usual* and *normal* El Nino and El Nina that happens on the Pacific Coast to all of the above plus the global warming but they don't mention that. And they get paid the big bucks!
