Guest guest
Does everyone know that raw Poke is poisonous? Only the young stalks should be eaten after being thoroughly cooked? The seeds and roots should never be eaten. But then I always heard while growing up that spinach and broccoli should not be eater raw. I was told that these veggies should be boiled and the water thrown away. I am curious. Is this an 'old wive's tale' or is it true? Guest guest
I have eaten poke weed cooked and raw. But like you said, only the young stalks are really safe. People also " par-boil " the mature stalks- throw the first water away. But I would be afraid to do that. Only the very young stalks should be eaten- they are very good. I have used the purple berries to dye yarn with. Google Phytolacca americana and you can read about the plant.
