Does everyone know that raw Poke is poisonous? Only the young stalks

should be eaten after being thoroughly cooked? The seeds and roots

should never be eaten. But then I always heard while growing up that

spinach and broccoli should not be eater raw. I was told that these

veggies should be boiled and the water thrown away.

I am curious. Is this an 'old wive's tale' or is it true?

I have eaten poke weed cooked and raw. But like you said, only the

young stalks are really safe. People also " par-boil " the mature

stalks- throw the first water away. But I would be afraid to do that.

Only the very young stalks should be eaten- they are very good. I have

used the purple berries to dye yarn with. Google Phytolacca americana

and you can read about the plant.
