Guest guest
Hi: I am a new member to this group, an young Indian Veg. student going to the UK for the first time, aged 18, new to the nuances of cooking. I want the guidance regarding: 1. where and what vessels to buy for veg. cooking - like rice cooker, chapathi maker, saucepan, microwave compatiables ? 2. I am on a low string budget, and where can I source the same ? 3. Will Indian spices be available, as well as ready made paranthas, and rotis ? How will I distinguish between pastries and dishes which have egg and which dont, since I am a Hindu by birth and dont eat eggs. Thanks for your time Bharath
Guest guest
Hi.. You don't say where you will be based in the UK. What resources are available to you will vary from place to place. I'm based in Edinburgh and here we have many good shops that stock the kind of Indian spices etc that your talking about at low prices. They are mainly run by Indians who are now settled in Edinburgh and therefore will probably stock exactly the things you want. Supermarkets like tesco etc also stock chapatis etc but they're likely to be a wee bit more expensive. They don't really sell spices in bulk but do have a wide selection in small individual bottles. I'm not sure about your cheaper supermarket chains like Liddl's. In terms of the saucepans etc you need for veg cooking a good place to buy cheap saucepans is Ikea. There saucepans are good and inexpensive. They also have other cooking stuff too. As far as I can remember they do a good kitchen box set for a starter kitchen which is a good start. I'm not sure about rice cookers etc as I don't personally own them - I tend to just steam my rice above a normal saucepan of water - but you do see things like this quite cheap. In terms of finding out about things with egg or not then you just have to ask I am afraid and read ingredient lists carefully. It'll be a bit of a chore! All the advice above is very basic and sweeping - if you need any more help just ask. Guest guest
Wow, another member in Edinburgh! I'm based on the southside, Rebecca. Hi Bharath I agree with what Rebecca said plus: Another place to buy cheap saucepans is in supermarkets - I got some very reasonable saucepans from Sainsbury's. For electrical goods like rice cookers etc it is just a question of shopping around. I got a steamer for £8 because it had been a display model and they hasd lost its packaging. It is worth checking out supermarkets and electirical stores and comparing prices. As Rebecca said there are lots of shops here run by people from the Indian sub-continent who will also be able to help you out with particular ingredients. But you should know that Indian is practically the national cuisine here in Britain so most ingredients should be readily available and there are usually readymade parathas and chapatis in the supermarkets! You will find that most food items here are labelled as being suitable for vegetarians and increasingly also whether they are suitable for vegans. In any case all ingredients must be included on the labelling here. I hope you enjoy your stay in Britain. Don't hesitate to ask if you have any more questions.
