Guest guest
Hi Everyone, My husband and I are working at making the transition to a vegetarian lifestyle. I'm not much of a cook and never have been so I don't have any recipes accumulated that I can share yet. We are both in our fifties and are getting kind of a late start to working at improving our health. For myself, the journey started about a year ago when I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. I spent most of the last year being in denial about it and not caring for myself at all. But a couple months ago, I really started to take an interest in getting back to health and possibly even reversing the diabetes completely. I started power walking 3 times a week and am increasing that by 15 minute increments over the weeks until I reach 1/2 aerobic activity 6 days a week. So far, I've lost 20 lbs (I started out at 193). I'm also in weight watchers which is helping me a lot. I guess my main concern is will I be getting enough protein? I have to go really lite on even whole grain pastas and rice because they jack my blood sugar up really high. I've also noticed a lot of recipes call for black beans. Are those higher in protein that other beans? Also, do you have to combine a grain with beans to get a complete protein? I'm sure I'll have other questions as I go along. I'm also wondering if there are other diabetics on this list making a vegetarian lifestyle work for them. Thanks for your time. I look forward to learning a lot. Guest guest
Hi Johanna! Yes, there are other type 2 diabetics here! :-) You've done a great job already, especially with all that exercise. Congrats! I saw the doctor in January (after avoiding the doctor for years) and was given the bad news that I had an A1c of 12.2. Ouch. Very, very out of control diabetes. I had been ovo lacto vegetarian for 30 years, but not a healthy one. I'm also not much of a cook (though more than I used to be), so we have several things in common. I have been following Eat To Live since January and have lost 40 lbs (I was also 193 in January). This is a _vegan_ plan. I get plenty of protein from beans, nuts, seeds and even greens. I'll be 48 next week. (Yeah, a birthday!) My A1c in April was 6.1 with no medications. And my cholesterol dropped 81 points. I'll be redoing all the blood work in a couple weeks and I'm hoping it's still good! Combining foods for the protein is a myth. Frances Moore Lappe (who stated this in her book Diet For a Small Planet years ago) has tried to correct this information, but it has worked its way into modern mythology and won't leave. I would recommend that you read The China Study by T Colin Campbell which debunks modern views on protein consumption. :-) Welcome! Guest guest
Hope you are not using splenda. Stevia is much better. And please do your research on the toxic effects of SODIUM FLUORIDE toothpaste. A vegetarian who still uses fluoride is undoing the health benefits of not eating flesh. I'm a newie. 23 years free of a cancer that I healed myself. Guest guest
Hi Sharon, Thanks a lot for writing. It helps to establish communication with someone else who's traveled the path I now find myself on. I haven't seen my doctor in 3 months. I have an appt on July 19. I'm not looking forward to going either. I went grocery shopping on Sunday but didn't buy any meat. We still have meat to use up that's in the freezer and then we'll be going meatless. We don't have much meat left in the freezer though so I've planned for several meatless dishes over the next 2 weeks. I'm so happy that'll I'll be able to make this work with my diabetes! That really was my one big worry. No, I've never been much of a cook either. My poor kids grew up eating an awful lot of spaghetti and chili with beans and meatloaf! So this will really be a big adventure for me! I'll have to check out that Eat to Live book you mentioned. Maybe I can find a used copy on Amazon.com. I'll check into it. I'm not sure I'm ready yet to cut out eggs and dairy products yet though. Happy Birthday to You! And thank you for the warm welcome. We'll talk again, soon.
