Guest guest
Dianne, the food is in mason jars or light weight pans with lids, painted black ( to absorb heat) , placed in an oven bag. everything's sealed up so there's no food smell to attract critters. there's links to recipies and all kinds of info on pans, etc, at http://www.solarcooking.org/ I did a lot of reading before trying it, always put my oven thermometer in the bag too so I can keep an eye on the temp. my best pot so far is an old aluminum coffee pot lined with an oven bag ( there was a lot of corrosion inside and I don't like aluminum to cook in anyway). this is now my potato cooker. I put duct tape inside over the holes by the spout when I painted it, cut off the oven bag so it folds over the top about an inch or so, drop in a washed spud, put on the lid, whole works into oven bag and - wa la - hours later when ready to eat I have a baked/steamed with its own juice potato. have also left broccoli and cauliflower in too long ( in a mason jar ) they looked singed and wilted but tasted ok. haven't had any problems with animals did have to modify due to wind, instead of a bucket my windshield shade is now in a cardboard box with clothes pins holding it to the flaps. here's some links to people in Fla who know more about solar cooking than me ( I'm just learning) Shores Presbyterian Church Outreach Comm * Miami Solar Connecion * 602 NE 96TH STREET * MIAMI SHORES * FL * 33138 * Office: 305-754-9541 * Teaches about solar cooking in Miami area through church activities and raises funds to support the Free Methodist Church project in Haiti.
