Guest guest
I always try to be as open as possible with people, figuring if they were educated maybe they would become vegetarian, too -- OR at least not treat us poorly. I am in an all-vegetarian band, and almost nobody knows it. When they hear we're all vegetarians, I always get asked stuff like, " So do you guys just like write a bunch of songs about eating broccoli or something? " I always have to explain that vegetarians are people, too. We aren't so one-dimensional. Besides that, not every vegetarian is vegetarian for the same reason. You guys might be interested in an interview with the band at: www.vegetarianwomen.com -- you can scroll to the bottom, and we're there. People usually just get really curious when they hear I am vegetarian. I've only had a few people give me a hard time about it, and they are always people who don't really know me -- just heard that I am vegetarian. We were having birthday cake at work, and I had one wise guy say " Can you eat this? Ha ha ha! Yuck yuck yuck! " I was just like, " I think this is probably ok, but I haven't read the ingredients. A lot of the time they hide gelatin in desserts, so I prefer to read the ingredients -- but it's just cake with regular icing that is usually ok, so I'm not going to make [the boss] dig through the garbage to pull it out for me. I'll just have a LITTLE piece. Ha ha ha. Yuck yuck yuck. " It was slightly sarcastic, but just edgy enough to get respect. My favorite thing was there was somebody else at work who heard I was vegetarian. There is also this Indian guy in the IT department who is vegetarian. The woman was like, " Hey! [indian guy] is vegetarian, too -- I'll bet you guys have a lot in common! " I do have some stock answer suggestions that have worked for me: Q: So... do you eat fish or chicken or anything? A: No. People who eat those are called pescatarian (sp?). Vegetarians don't eat meat/anything that ever had a face. Q: So... do you eat cheese or eggs or stuff? A: Yes. There are more hard-core vegetarians that don't eat that stuff, but they usually call themselves vegans. Q: What's the difference between a vegetarian and a vegan? A: Vegetarian is usually a description of a diet. Vegan is usually a description of a lifestyle. Vegetarians don't eat meat. Vegans don't eat meat, eggs, or dairy. Plus, vegans usually don't wear leather, silk, wool, eat honey, use products tested on animals, etc. Q: Ha ha ha! I'll bet you wish you could eat this [meat product here]! A: No. Not really. Good luck!
Guest guest
A lot of people think that vegetarians just open a can of green beans or peas or the like and think that is a meal. When they find out all the good food that is available and the new ways to them to prepare it, they are much more receiving of the concept. I always bring vegetarian dishes to church, and now everyone races to get some of whatever I bring. Corn pudding is always a request!!! Many of them had never tasted it before.
