Guest guest
That horrible story in the news sparked a new question for me. How many of you have children who are vegetarians? How long have they been vegetarians?? I was just wondering how they get enough calcium and protein? Thank you so much!! -Sue M.
Guest guest
That story about the people who fed their child what they thought was a vegan diet was pure nonsense--people like them give vegetarians a bad name. Those people obviously knew nothing about nutrition. They fed the child soy milk--it says right on the containers of soy milk that they are not substitutes for infant formula. They were also not getting medical care for that child either so there was no mature adult responsibility on their part for that child's care. When I became a vegetarian I had to learn again how to cook. I also had a crash course in nutrition thanks to Laurels Kitchen and Diet for a Small Planet. Some people mistakenly believe that they can simply just quit eating meat, fish, poultry, eggs, and dairy products. I have been a vegetarian since 1976. My younger son was raised essentially as a vegetarian. He was very healthy and it instilled in him a habit of eating well as an adult, even though he is not a 'practicing' vegetarian. It was and is easy to get enough protein and calcium--of course we were/I am lacto ovo vegetarians, but I eat very little dairy and eggs and know that it is easy to get adequate calcium and protein in a vegan diet.
