Coconut Confusion...Judy

Hi Judy,

 

This is a great tool for getting fresh coconut out of the shell, cuz

that is a tough nut .

Mostly what you want is a finely toothed edge. I bet if you wandered

through the hardware store you could find something adaptable for less

than this one! Maybe half a small circular saw blade?? I've seen

people recommend zesters but that seems like it would take forever.

And I'd be hesitant to put it in my food processor but I've heard of

people doing it that way.

there's a nice pic of young green coconuts cut open. The thick outer

husk can be dried & becomes coir which is used for many many things,

from mattresses to worm bins Coconuts are wonderfully useful on

top of being tasty.

 

I never noticed a taste difference between the orange & green ones but

it seemed to me that the green ones had more liquid in them.

Thanks Bryan for this info. I would have been shocked if I had opened

one and found it soft or jelly like........ Do you have any tricks

for getting the hard coconut meat to release from the shell? I've

only seen the hairy round type shells in our store here, but when we

were in Key West on Vacation, they had some very smooth(non-hairy)

shelled elongated ones. Have you seen different kinds and is the

coconuts and are they different in taste and texture on the inside?

My pleasure Judy Hard to believe you can buy them online; guess

you can get just about anything online now, eh? I have one of the

kind you crank but mine is old and not stainless steel (fancy! heheh)

I used to be able to scrape out a coconut in under 4 minutes but not

any more - now it's more like 10 or 15 lol. I've used a really

old-fashioned kind which is a small-toothed blade attached to a small

bench you sit on but the crank kind is easier for me.
