Hi all,

If you are lucky enough to have a Wild Oats near by,

this month in the free magazine they have, there just

happens to be an article about storing your produce. I

couldn't find it online, so I'll type up the important

stuff ;)

American families toss on average 470lbs of food per

year. Just an FYI

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The worse thing you can do is seal produce in an air
tight bag. You want your veggies to breath.
There are some products out there that absorb the
ethylene gas that some foods put off. One is called
the E.G.G, another is Extralife.
When you shop, get everything else first, an then get
your produce. The goal is to get it home cool, before
they can respire quickly.
Keep produce whole, don't yank the stems and stuff off
until you are ready to use them.
Don't refridgerate onions, winter squash or garlic.
Store them in a cool dark place.
Refridgerate these gas producers: Apples, Apricots,
Cantaluope, figs and honeydew.
DONT refridgerate these gas producers: Avocados,
bananas (unripe), nectarines, peaches, pears, plums
and tomatoes.
Keep these away from the gas producers: Banana's
(ripe), broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, carrots,
cauliflower, cucunmber, eggplants, lettuce and other
leafy greens, parsely, peas, peppers, squash, sweet
potatoes, watermelon.
The following is a list of what to eat in order, if
you want to do a once a week shopping trip (Sunday is
the start day)
Eat first (Sun-Tues): Artichokes, asparagus, avocados,
bananas, basil, broccoli, cherries, corn, dill, green
beans, mushrooms, mustard greens, strawberries,
watercress.
Eat next (Weds-Fri): Arugula, cucumbers, eggplant,
grapes, lettuce, lime, mesclun, pineapple, zucchini
Eat last: Apricots, bell peppers, blueberries, brussel
sprouts, cauliflower, grapefruit, leeks, lemons, mint,
oranges, oregano, parsley, peaches, pears, plums,
spinach, tomatoes, watermelon
And beyond: Apples, beets, cabbage, carrots, celery,
garlic, onions, potatoes, winter squash.
Good luck!
Libby
