Guest guest
Hi Carol... Wow, your story is quite an eye opener!!! Fortunately your son was close by and knew the signs to take you to the hospital. I have had high cholesterol for years and last year the doctor put me on Lipitor (low dose). While on Lipitor, my protein level went through the roof and I was suffering from major migraines, blurred vision and leg pains so he took me off. Now I'm on a low dose of another prescribed medication but he told me I too was a candidate for a heart attack. I have cut back on fats, red meat and sodium and I am attempting to cut all meats from my diet. Your personal story has basically slapped me in the face which is exactly what I needed. My oldest daughter is a vegetarian and is always the healthiest one in the family. Thank you so very much for sharing your story with us. Being a vegetarian is a " healthier way of living " and I'm really trying. My husband and I have always enjoyed lentils and grains, especially Quinoa. I cannot eat any nuts, coconut which is not from the nut family or oatmeal but I work around those. I have always enjoyed tofu but watch the amount of soy I ingest because I have Thyroiditis. Best of luck with your new way of eating! Laura/Lor P.S. I too am new to the group. Carol <retrieverpup wrote: Hi My name is Carol. I have lived in Central Florida all of my life. Being a vegetarian is all new to me. I had a heart attack 2 years ago on my 46th birthday and ended up having triple bypass. Its funny, I never even realized I had a heart attack. It happened during the night that I had minor pain in my left shoulder. I thought it was my arthritis bothering me so I took some asprin (Thank God) I was out of tylenol. I went back to bed, I got up the next morning washed the dog, went shopping and went out and ate all you can eat ribs. Later when I got home I told my son that I had problems off and on during the day catching my breath. He said I will be right there to take you to the hospital you had a heart attack. I argued with him for a few minutes. He came and got me and I went to the hospital. Sure enough, I had a heart attack the night before when I woke with the mild pain in my shoulder. So now it is a big joke that mom had to have the all you can eat ribs before she could go to the hospital with a heart attack. Anyway for some reason, this didn't scare me enough to quit eating everything that I know is bad for me. So I continued eating all types of meat and sweets and what have you. About 2 months ago I had another scare with my heart and this time it hit home. I realized that if I didn't do something major I wouldn't be around to get married this Sept. or to see my grandson grow up. So right then and there I quit eating meats. I eat only fruits and vegetables. I classify myself as a vegetarian. I don't think I could become a vegan, I like cheese to much. My son was a vegan for 4 years when he was in high school and I just don't have that kind of self control. I am the only person in the house that is eating this way. I still cook meat for my fiance. He is very supportive. So far I have lost 17 pounds and I have also started working out at Curves. I am looking forward to learning recipes, ideas, anything I can about being a vegetarian. Guest guest
Thanks for joining the group... I'm in Florida too...and with a similiar story just a little younger than you... Carol your not alone... My husband and me started practicing Meatout mondays...No meats/except dairy foods...It's working...limit meats now...and add more veggies/fruits to our diets. I'm losing weight too...Morningstar is my best quick meatless product...Love the nuggets, burgers, and even the strips. I've started restocking my fridgerator and cabinets...it makes it a lot easier to get the veggies in... Keep it up....if you slip off...get right back on...
