Guest guest
Does Poke grow in NJ? I've never had but would like to try it. I don't even know what it looks like. - " Rachel Rowell " <hippiemama06 Sunday, March 25, 2007 4:57 PM Poke salat I am familiar with poke, being from Alabama and all. My grandmother calls it poke salad, pronounced " poke salat " . I've never been much of a fan of poke salat, though, but maybe I'll give it another try! Guest guest
Definitely grows all over South Jersey. Look for a large, 6-8 foot clump of stems, green through the summer, dying and turning brown in winter. The stems are fleshy and green, and the leaves long and glossy green. The fruits are purple berries. Poke is only edible when the shoots are coming up in the spring (about 12-18 " tall). Older stalks, leaves and fruits are poisonous.
