Road Building to Be Allowed on National Forest 'Roadless' Areas

May 06, 2005 — By John Heilprin, Associated Press

WASHINGTON — The last 58.5 million acres of untouched national forests, which

President Clinton had set aside for protection, were opened to possible logging,

mining and other commercial uses by the Bush administration on Thursday.

New rules from the U.S. Forest Service cover some of the most pristine federal

land in 38 states and Puerto Rico. Ninety-seven percent of it is in 12 states:

Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico,

Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

Eating him I'd feel like Frankenstein

Eating flesh seems pretty foul to me

Road building that will be paid for with our tax dollars. Logs that will be

sold to the highest bidder which usually works out to less than $1/lineal

foot for trees that sell to mills for $600/1000 board feet (18 " diameter,

60' of tree). So, $60 plus a max of $180 to cut and haul for $600 for trees

that are hauled over roads that we paid for but can't use (hikers, mountain

bike riders aren't allowed on these roads).
